Broken eggs in setting hen nest

I have a hen who just began setting a few days ago. Due to a squabble between the hen and another some eggs were broken. I removed the other hen and the setting hen has her own space where no others can get to her. If the eggs she is setting on are somewhat covered in egg from the broken eggs...

    Duck eggs wet in nest

We've had about 5 inches of rain in the last 6 days and the dry nest my duck had in a sheep shelter is now a wet nest. The eggs are not submerged but many of them are wet from water running in. Should I remove most of them and add more straw to raise the nest level to let her lay a new clutch or...

    Bathing meat chickens

My granddaughter is raising meat chickens for the fair this year for the first time. Though we have been diligent about keeping their bedding and coop clean, they still are a bit dingy on their breast area and tail feathers. I know that these birds are quite fragile and I am wondering how she...

    It was raining day-old chicks!!

Yesterday it was a beautiful day to be outside so I spent the afternoon shearing my sheep. I had to pass by the coop several times and one time I heard a chick peeping. Because I have some 5 week olds in my outside brooder, I assumed one of them had somehow escaped. I searched around and found...

What's the the difference between OEGB and Dutch?

I have some OEGB that I bought at a show and really like them. I have also seen some Dutch bantams and they look the same to me. I know there must be a difference that breeders can see that I can't. Is there a way to tell these two breeds apart just by looking? Thanks!

    I know better but.....

I went to pick up my 25 ISA Brown pullets and the store had some unclaimed bantys. I brought home 6 (breed unknown). Have I gone over the edge? P.S. They are tiny and adorable.

Looking for a Dominique roo MI or N IN

My only Dominique roo died last fall and I would like to get another for my 8 hens, hopefully in time to set a few eggs this spring. Since I'm in mid-Michigan and my MIL is in Ft. Wayne area, I'd like to be able to pick one up somewhere between here and there. Thanks!

    Falconpak egg cartons

I recently saw a thread about buying egg cartons that had a website listed for falcon pak. I want to look at their site, but even after doing a search, I can't find the info. I also tried Google and got nowhere. Can anyone help? Thanks!

    Ohio National Show

Does anyone know anything about the Ohio National Show? It is within a day's drive for me and I'm thinking to go just as a spectator (for this year anyway). Is it a big show with lots of different breeds? Thanks!

I need a recipe for brining chickens

I have been reading about brining for tenderizing chicken and I'd like to try it. How is the brine made? I assume water and salt, but any special kind of salt and in what proportion? Do I marinate in brine before freezing or when I am ready to cook the bird? Thanks for any information.

What's the best age to process ducks?

I know the ducks that I have won't be very meaty, they're runner ducks, but I'm not sure about when to process. This is the first time that I've had more ducks than I have room for. Besides, I'd like to try duck. It is not readily available in stores here and if I do find it, it is...

Do I have Orloff boys or girls?

I have 7 Spangled Russian Orloffs and I love them, but at 14 weeks I still can't tell what gender they are. Is there a way to tell? In my other chicks of that age, gender is fairly obvious but these kids have me stumped. They all look pretty much the same--no feather difference, no comb...

Yikes! I need help with judging goats

The superintendent of our local agricultural fair phoned me last night to ask if I would judge a small dairy goat youth class in a few days. Because we had dairy goats 25 years ago when our daughters were small (and, I suspect, because she wasn't able to find another judge), she thought I would...

Duck & hen incubating same eggs

Hi everyone, I have a pair of call ducks living with my silkies. The duck made a nest and has started setting. I have been checking several times a day (it's lambing time and I'm up day and night anyway) and the duck seems to be setting during the day and a silkie hen sets at night. I suppose...

Are Russian Orloffs good layers, mothers?

I am considering getting some Russian Orloffs, but don't know a lot about them. Are they good layers? Will they set and are they good mothers? Sand Hill Preservation says "yes" Feathersite says "no". I'd like some information from somebody who has actual experience raising them, if possible...

    Jiffy-Way Egg Scale

I hope that this is in the right place. I have a Jiffy-Way egg scale that I bought on E-bay. I remember using one as a kid and wanted one now that I have chickens. It didn't have instructions with it and because I was a kid when last I used one, I'm not sure what some of the info on the scale...

I'm looking for a trio of either. I live in mid-Michigan and my in-laws live in Ft. Wayne area so I get there fairly often. Thanks!

    isolating breeding pair

HI, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, but, how long should a breeding pair be separated from the rest of the flock to make sure the eggs are from that pair? I have a couple of breeds ranging together and want to make sure when I incubate eggs, that I know who the parents...

    Blue legged Seabrights?

I bought some unidentified banty chicks at our local feed store. Now that they are they feathered out, they have golden seabright feathers. Roos are hen feathered, but they, hens and roos, have blue legs. Everything I have read says that seabrights have yellow legs. Can they have blue legs? Maybe...
