    dead chicken... WHY!?!?!

what killed my prize chicken? even though she never won any prizes, she won my heart. she was one of three that i kept at my house (as opposed to 'the farm'), and she was the tamest of the three. she was also the most plump, which probably delayed my detection of her illness. she had blood...

    Kakis Member Page

Greetings to all, I am an Australian living in Japan (right down the bottom end in Kagoshima, so nowhere near the recent trouble...). I run a small English school in my house and have just started keeping chickens at home/the school. I have 4 at home/school, hopefully 1 rooster and 3 hens. Only...

using unhatched eggs taken from incubator

Thanks for the replies, they came out of the incubator around day 5 at the first candling, and went straight into the fridge. I have no sense of smell, so I wouldn't know if they smell bad... I'll get my wife to check for me. I bet she'll enjoy that.

using unhatched eggs taken from incubator

This sounds like a bad idea, but I set 17 eggs, on first candling I realised that only 4 were developing. I took out most of the unfertilised eggs, and I am wondering if they would be ok to boil them and put them in the hen's / chick's feed? Disease is a worry, but it seems like such a waste...

    blood-shot eyes and apathy

Thanks for the swift reply. I poured myself a holiday drink and picked her up to have a better look at her. We sat in direct sunlight and I noticed that she was breathing heavily, however that had abated about 15 minutes later. 20 minutes after I had picked her up she stood up and tried to get...

    blood-shot eyes and apathy

Seasons greetings to all, I'm having a cold Christmas holiday here, just me and the birds. The nights are cold, but haven't reached 0 yet. This morning I went out to give the girls breakfast and one of them just stood where I place the feed tray, like she was waiting. The other 2 followed me...

    How many doubles???

I regularly get doubles, but one of my first eggs was a triple! So far I have had about 10 double yolkers, and to tell the truth I'm a bit worried that the hen laying them has a problem. However, they are less than a year old so this might be normal. I believe I have video proof several...

What is a 'gentleman' rooster actually like.

After reading these posts, I have decided to turn my rooster into nuggets. He's shocking! I often see him standing on the head of a hen, pushing it into the dirt. He tries to stop the hens from eating and is quick to snatch something from their beaks. He has never attacked me or anyone else, and...

    rooster visits disrupt social order?

I could get fertile eggs from the 'farm' if they were laying. I must also say that I dont agree with the way my father in law keeps his chickens. He has been keeping them for years in small cages, so I made a fence around the property so they can free-range and a big chicken house big enough...

    rooster visits disrupt social order?

I've never heard of anyone doing that with a roo, only dogs... I wouldn't even know where to take him here in Japan... I did read a few posts about ways to stop him crowing at inconvenient hours, such as keeping the coop dark (failed) or putting him in a box at night so he cant extend his...

    rooster visits disrupt social order?

Greetings all, My father in law and I split a batch of chicks bought in April/May this year. I have 3 chooks at home and he has 3 more in another location, and we have only one rooster. I used to keep him at home, but when he started to crow I had to send him to the 'farm' (father in law's...

    Everyone's favorite nesting box...

Greetings, I have 3 beautiful chickens (of still unknown breed) still less than a year old. They are laying well but always in the same nesting box. I made 3 boxes all next to each other, but I sometimes see them queuing up to use the favorite one. They also used to have a secret nest in the...

hi from the confused english man

dude, I read that you have to reduce the acidity of the manure before you can use it... If you are composting it might not be a big problem (if you know how to control the balance of the compost) but I live in a VERYVERYvery tight neighbourhood and cant afford the bad smell. I just add lime...

    Chickens In Kimonos

Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome! @ChicKat Thanks, and yes, Kaki means persimmon in Japanese, and it's the first part of my new surname. I took my wife's name when we married, and now I am Sean of the 'Field of persimmon trees'. Japanese names are like British ones, "grassy hill"...

    Do chickens like beer?

... because I have some left over from a party, and even though I'm an Aussie, I don't drink it... About feed, I add water to it, but my mother in law (who knows nothing about chickens, just a little less than me) My father would mix water in with the chicken feed to make something breakfast...
