I used a plucker last year for the first time and although I had 2 broken wings, (they got caught in the plucker) I will never pluck birds by hand again. Even though we did one bird at a time it took less than 30 seconds to pluck a bird CLEAN!
The fresh turkeys I've seen sold in the markets sure look like standard commercial broad breasted whites. The only difference should be that they haven't been frozen. They really shouldn't taste any different.
Not always true. I worked in a grocery store meat department a few years ago and...
I know this has probably been addressed in this thread but I am going to ask again. How do you tell the sex of Buff Brahma's? Mine are are about 12 weeks old and they are all huge and friendly but no one is standing out as a roo. I have eight so I shoud jsut by the odds have both sexes since I...
Thanks ColbyNTX, I don't think we have anything like that in Northern VT. THANKFULLY! I HATE snakes! Most we seem to have around here is garter snakes.
I have a broody RP hen, she is in with another RP hen who is laying but does not show interest in sitting eggs. The second hen will lay in the nest with the broody one who is sitting on them. Every day or so there will be say 7 eggs, the next day 6 eggs, the next day 7 again and so on. Will they...
My lt Brahma's are not from BYCers. they are from TSC and even the hatchery ones are HUGE at 5 weeks! They are very friendly too. I have them in large dog crates until it is warm enough to go out to the coop, every time I reach in to get feeder or waterer I have at least one chick sitting on my...
Does anyone use the dry method for turkeys? At this point I am willing to try anything to get some more to hatch. I have been having really poor hatches and am about ready to toss the incubator out the front door! I do have the idea that some of my problem was old hens. I now have narrowed my...
I had this problem a week or so ago, but at least it was a scheduled power outage by the electric company for maintenance. (Who in their right mind schedules a 6 hour power outage at the end of March in Northern Vermont) Since I knew it was coming, I went to the local automotive store and got a...
I just checked my RP Daisy who is (was) sitting on 15 eggs. Went to fill her water and noticed an egg that looked like it was a different color. I made her stand up, (NOT EASY) and there was a broken egg in the middle of her nest. 2 eggs have quite a bit of yolk dried on them. Should I TRY to...
No generator and sadly the power companys office is about 50 miles away so that is not an option! I have 2 styrofoam still air incubators, one with a turner and one without for hatching. I think I can move the one with turner into the room with the heater and try the blanket route, the hatching...
I just found out that our electric company has a planned power outage scheduled for this Saturday at midnight until 6am. I have an incubator FULL of turkey eggs. Some will be going into lockdown the next day and I just set 22 last night. What can I do to keep them warm? In northern VT the...
I am getting too many turkey eggs for my incubator and not having a whole lot of luck hatching that way. My RP hen was stealing eggs (turkey and chicken) and sitting on them every night. I had 15 eggs too many for the incubator so I separated her and gave her the leftover eggs. She is trying so...
This is how his legs hang naturally, if picked up.
You can see his right foot behind his left hock
From behind - left leg normal, right leg - ?? -
I don't think the hobbles made much difference (he's worn them for about 16hrs now...
From looking at your pictures, it is almost identical to my...
I had a turkey hatch that had what sounds like the same problem, Instead of legs going out to the sides, one was out and one was in and curled back. I tried the hobbles, splints and putting him supported in a plastic container lines with soft materials so he had to TRY to stand but with support...
I have a one day old poult with leg problems. I am not sure if it would be considered spraddle leg or not. Most of the pictures I have seen in the forums of spraddle leg have the legs spread out to the sides, this one has one leg out to the side and one leg pointing in with curled toes on the...
Thanks for all the input. Does anyone know if there is chart or table out there that will answer questions like this? I have such a mixed up flock right now that I have an almost staggering number of possible matings. 1 RP tom, 1 Blus Slate tom, 1 Burbon Red tom, 1 Black Tom and 3 Blue Slate...
