Sounds like you're making progress--good job!
Sometimes their individual personalities make them goofy no matter how much time you spend. I spend a lot the first couple of weeks, but eventually they move out of the mudroom into the big brooder in my big coop and it's more difficult, but some of...
I think you are what might be called an enabler...and I like that :) The distance is probably a good thing...but I may take you up on it someday!
Someday I might take the plunge but for now I'm having enough trouble restraining myself from increasing my flock. Well, ok, I guess the problem...
Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. She's been decent for me--sometimes a busy mom but overall been pretty good. Glad you found some--I love mine. They are so pretty to look at and have very calm, friendly dispositions that I enjoy. My goal is to have Junior (the Lav.Orp I'd gotten from Jill) set up...
Try Jill Besida at Sunnyside Up Micro Farm in Valley City--she has some lovely birds. She occasionally has pullets for sale but they would be older to be guaranteed pullets = more $$. Or take your chances and get a few chicks straight run. They are lovely birds :) She's on Facebook or has a...
Wow--you can tell spring is around the corner! Lots of missed conversation since I was last on BYC! I don't get notified anymore when there's new comments even though I have it set up that way...anyways, nice to see all the new members and all the new chick arrivals, or countdowns. I'm trying...
Hi chickB26,
"Sweet PDZ" is an all natural product that is sort of like ground up 'clay.' It was used primarily in horse stalls, deodorizes and neutralizes ammonia from the horse urine...now it's used in coops, kennels, etc. No odor to it--I get the granular kind. It runs about $10 at the...
I raised my egg price from $2.50 to $3 a dozen about a year ago. When I saw the factory eggs in the grocery stores were going for $2-3 and the 'brown' eggs or those labeled organic were $3.50-4, I thought the time was right. Mine are not organic--no way to claim that when I am next to a bean...
Hi! Sorry for delay--I don't get notices from BYC when there's updates on my subscriptions.
Yes, I'd try to call again. I'm hoping he's still in business because we'll need him later in the spring. He is seasonal, does this on the side so maybe he's just slow in responding...I hope!
Jordan Fraker in Ostrander does a real nice job--he's done the fair chickens (Delaware County) for the last two years, and I'm hoping he continues to process birds as we're planning on raising some this spring.

Not sure if you're open to ordering shipped chicks but I'd highly recommend checking out Papa's Poultry in CA....he has BCM, Cuckoo Marans and BBS chicks. I ordered from him last year (Gold Cuckoo Marans, OE, Rhodebars and Crested Cream Legbars) and was skeptical/concerned because of the...
I too am supporting a bunch of freeloaders and have stooped to an all-time low...had my dd BUY eggs from Meijer last weekend. I am mortified.
I have 35 hens (plus 2 roosters)..and right now if I get 1-2 eggs every couple of days I am pathetically grateful. Molting pretty much done so...
Also, for those who might be interested...tempted....check out Papa's Poultry (facebook or website). Jeff is running some great Cyber Monday specials if you were wanting some of the breeds he carries. HIGHLY recommend him--I ordered from him last November with reservations as CA is a long ways...
In the Delaware area I sell mine for $3 a dozen. Raised from $2 to help offset feed cost. Cannot get my girls to lay enough! Grocery stores selling brown eggs for $4+ a dozen....mine truly come from happy, spoiled hens.
Welcome Neighbor!
I'm just a little southwest of you in Delaware County (northeast of the city) so we're sorta neighbors, at least in the poultry world :)
Hope you have a bit of room, you won't be stopping with the chicken gathering! It is a fun addiction...I'm up to 42 for now, but four...
So sorry to hear of your tough summer. Can be pretty discouraging. I've lost a couple too including a 5 week old BCM chick hatched by my bantam Orp for no apparent reason. Not to mention four of the remaining five appear to be cockerels. Sigh.
But I am looking forward to my fun babies...
Not sure if this helps but "blessedchick" might be able to help you with the Silkie search...I don't know her personally but she's in central ohio (north of Delaware) and I know she has lovely Silkies, plus I think she works with our local feedstore with spring chick days and the chicken swaps...
Uh-oh....I see an addiction in the works. No turning back now....how exciting! Lots and lots of peeps in the very near future (although I'm sure you could stop anytime you wanted to).
Congratulations on your move and welcome to Buckeye country and BYC! As RedNewcomer (sorry if I got your name wrong...going by memory..not a good thing:)) said, Champion just got their first batch of chicks in yesterday--all pullets. They will be getting a bigger variety later, I think...
