My chickens are night owls. AND early birds.
Whenever I have a need to go out back, regardless of the time, my favorite chickens run down the ramp to talk to me. I mean as late as 1am. Don't they need sleep? They sure are up before 7am.
I tell them to get upstairs to bed and they do go...
So my chickens have a small coop with a small run. They get to be out every day all day. But they are tearing my yard up. I mean digging a million holes and generally driving us all insane. It is a chicken wasteland.
So I want to put two stretches of fence, connecting to the house and the...
Nancy started laying a few weeks ago. Laid GREAT for two weeks. Then she just stopped. It has been a week and no eggs. She seems totally fine. Happy, talking at me a bunch, letting us pick her up, eating fine.
I'm ok with the no eggs, but I just want some confirmation that this can be an ok...
I love my pullets. They don't HAVE to lay... but I love eggs too.
Mid April - Araucanna (sp?)
May 9th - Barred Rock
Mid July - Silver Laced Wyandotte.
The first two should be laying right?
They are free range a LOT but I keep looking everywhere and not finding eggs. Do I need to look harder...

My poor neighbor first got a single "laying pullet" and it turned out to be a STUNNING rooster. We are working on getting him a home.
He got 4 new pullets. There are two like this buff one. They are Buff Orpingtons right? He thinks...
I so wanted to call my coop the Loopy Coop, but it is known as Ghetto Coop. I made it out of an old coop I bought that had a handful of issues, a LOT of hardware cloth and a bunch of scrap wood I found along side the road. I love it. The yellow is a bit harsh, but I'm hoping it weathers nicely...

I was trying to take photos of Clara the SLW for the lady who sold her to me. You know, to show off how well she's doing. But Nancy won't let anyone get their photo taken! She sticks her cute head in the front of the camera every time!
all my chicken...
I'm thinking of switching to sand after I run through this huge bag of pine shavings I have.
My question is do you think I can use the sand I have from my pool sand filter. It's been dumped and sitting for... about a year? So I'm thinking anything organic that it filtered is long dead. They...
It was great! I have a little a frame chicken coop. The idea was that it would move around the yard, it's very light weight. But some horrible critter dug under it and got one of my chickens a few weeks back.
So we moved it up onto the patio, which was a stinky dirty mess and we didn't like...
When we went to buy some fresh eggs tonight (my pullets are not laying yet and I wanted eggs) one of my sons saw an egg in a coop and the lady let him have it.
The egg is likely fertilized. I tried to tell her to keep it because she is breeding chickens on purpose, but she insisted Ethan keep...
Do I do it like a 7 or like an L. I thought a 7, but DH wants it to be like an L so that the wire doesn't work its way out of the ground and mess up his mower or get stepped on by kid feet resulting in a cut. These concerns make sense but, besides being a ton more work would the L thing protect...
So today I start renovating the coop. I got an inexpensive small 4x8 A Frame deal on craigslist. Love it for it's smallness, we have a tiny backyard. The idea was to move it around every few days and let them muck up the yard under it.
Problems:
A raccoon got in. That's the big one, It doesn't...
My pullets are not laying yet. That's fine, they should take their time.
But I'm down to ONE store egg. I kinda want to make a stand and not buy store eggs. I mean I have spent $200 on chickens this month, I don't need to spend $2 on a package of lame eggs.
On the other hand eggs are my...
I am new to chickens and trying to make my 3 fall in love with me. I'm using treats to accomplish this goal. It's going well.
A few days ago I tried cranberries. They went NUTS. Now they don't really like any other treats, they just look offended that I don't give them cranberries all the...
one of my chickens dug a hole and is rolling around in the dirt like a silly weirdo. She seems to be enjoying this activity.
Is this the "dust bath" I've been hearing about?
She doesn't appear to have any mites or anything... do they do that just for fun?
Here is our newest chicken sitting happily on my 5 year old son's lap.
She is getting picked on by my other birds. I keep checking her and she's not actually getting hurt, or feathers pulled, just harassed. I hate it, but I rekon they have to come to some sort of agreement.
She is the tamest...
So you may have heard we had some nasty animal dig into our coop. Our solution was to move the coop onto the patio at night and weight it down. (It's just a light little chicken tractor type thing) That is working fine and everyone seems happy.
But today we were so busy and such that we never...
So this morning I cheerfully opened my bedroom window to check on my pretty girls.
And only counted two. Where was my Sweetums?
Then I noticed a TON of feathers.
I raced outside. Something dug under my coop and inside and apparently scared all the feathers off of Sweetums, then dragged her...
This morning I decided it's too hot and that I need to move the coop to a shadier part of the yard.
So I let my 3 girls out to free range for a bit and moved it.
Easy peasy.
Except I usually get them back in by just opening it up and they go right in. And they don't know where it is.
So I...
