Hey to the Dove pros out there!
I've read on equally adamant websites that you must not/may certainly keep Diamond Doves with finches.
Long story short - I just came into posession of a female zebra finch and female Diamond. They are currently together and seem fine. Then again, it's been...
White store bought egg, pastel green EE egg from our hen, pastel blue/green egg from ( I think) one of my new young (6-7 weeks) Coturnix .
What makes this color shell happen for quail ? I know it's happened to other folks, just not to me before! Can I expect others or is this a "starting up...
So - my friend brought a Hovabator 1620 w/turning rack and 25 hatching eggs. (...and you guys call yourselves enablers! ha! )
Temp. holding at just under 100 - humidity holding at just under 50. These conditions remained steady for 24 hours so I set this AM.
The Plan: peek in the window...
I do not keep ducks. My neighbor does and he appeared at my gate today with a female - he's not sure what - under his arm. He believes that she was attacked by a dog last night. She has a pretty big wound under her wing. I rinsed her with clean, warm water and applied antibiotic ointment (...
Just wondering - Do any of you use water bottles? I use a good ol' rabbit bottle and it works out really well. I ask only because I haven't heard mention of others doing it and I worry ( too much, I know) that there's a reason not to that I'm just not aware of........? Thanks!
After some trials, tribulations and other events: I have now 4 Coturnix quail.
Info: 1 DR male, 1 DR F - I mean DARK, a cool chocolate/deep red color, 1 A&M F - she gives eggs 1/2 again the size of most and last, my favorite - 1 golden F. They've been living together for about 6 weeks, no...
At some point soon I will have little Cot hatchlings under my care. I keep reading stories about escapees and am really concerned that I have to make my brooder of bricks to prevent this! I have a mental image now of birds the size of tiny mice popping out whenever I open the lid which around...
I've talked with our daughter about: ...some animals are for eating and others are not.... Now, she just turned 3...
We've talked about how the chickens we have now are for pets and giving us eggs and other chickens are for eating. Same with the quail.
We're going to get some CornishX this...
Hey There Duck Folk! I'd like to have just a couple of ducks for eggs. So...question time!!
2 females okay to kep each other company?
I'd like a calmer breed - or will temprament be more influenced by handling?
There will certainly be a 3 year old "helping " me with "her" ducks.
Bantam...
So - I'm kindof having a "do over". I brought the Goobers inside. They're so small and it's getting cold...and I like 'em where I can see 'em and laugh at 'em....
I kept 7 - 1 M Tibetan; F: 2 A&M, 1 E. White, 1 Roux dilute, 1 Tibetan, 1 golden
15 min. after they came inside, they were...
So - My goobers are molting like crazy and they are outside where, of course, the temp. has dropped. Am I right to resign myself to having no eggs until Spring when the temp. goes up a bit? BTW - How long does Cot molting last? It looks like they've been having pillow fights in there...
The step-by-step processing post. Thank you for that!
Now, I've been elbows deep in organs - human and animal - but always in the context of an OR or lab. I've never ended a life and processed anything myself before. Whole different ball game!! The post that you made was so clear that it...
I just want to double check my understanding.
Ratio of roos to hens is based on hens being overbred and roos fighting. 1 to 4 or 5 would be okay if the males ( in my case 2 cockerals and a roo) get along and the hens are treated well by the boys - right?
TIA
BTW: Do roos and cockerals often...
I brought home a black, frizzled cochin roo today - Ozzie. He's awesome!!! The flock - including the cockeral - took to him immediately - no fuss. But that makes 1 roo,1 cockeral, 7 hens, 7 pullets and 1 silkie that hasn't come forward to declare a gender. So I had to take the 2 three...
My roo is Pharoah. My 2 roux dilute, 2 Pharoah and golden girl all have "hairdo's" and rumpled backs. The 3 white and Tibetan girl look totally untouched. Really just kidding about the color bias...but he does seem to be only selectively mating some of his girls? Does this indicate something...
My daughter is almost three - therefore any pet she has is, in reality mine! I have years of experience with parakeets, cockatiels and many species of large parrots and the scars to prove it - so those are out....for now
She loves to hold our chickens and I've let her pet the Cots, while I...
