Hi there! I have a handful of 2-3 week old turkey poults that are getting hot in our Arizona heat (already - it’s 108 today 🥵). This year was a bit different, as I didn’t have an inside space to put a brooder, so we used the empty coop to build a brooder in. We turn on lamps at dusk. We turn...
I recently started using an Eco Glow Brooder for my first round of chicks I hatched out myself. I love that it's so much safer than standard heat lamps.
I have 22 turkey poults coming to me this week, and I was wondering if anyone has used the Eco Glow brooder for turkeys? Or are there any...
I've tried posting in the emergency section but no luck.
I have two 3-week-old poults that are ill - one is severely ill and is stretched out on their side with labored breathing. The other is way more alert, but unable to stand and falling back on their hocks. I've been giving them water with...
This morning I walked into our turkey room and in the brooder, I had two poults lying funny. One was laying straight out and twitching and the other was laying sort of stretched. The one that wasn't straight out I got to stand and walk around, and now you can't even tell there is anything wrong...
I got 20 poults two weeks ago (lost two the first week that I couldn't get to eat or drink) and some of them are starting to get black lines down the center of their heads, from about middle of the top of the head down towards their necks. I'm assuming its probably just their coloring starting...
I went out this morning to feed everyone and let the chickens out, and I noticed that one of my leghorns appeared to be uncomfortable. I watched her for a few minutes, and when she turned around I realized that she had what appeared to be an egg trying to pass, but covered in a red membrane. She...
One of our GSDs is now about three years old, and we have struggled to put weight on him, and keep it on. We've tried almost everything (high quality dog foods, etc.). Our vet has not been able to find anything wrong with him, other than he is way too thin. We're assuming high metabolism, which...
Hi y'all! I haven't been on BYC in SO long. Mostly because I couldn't convince my Dad to help me build a chicken coop and because I'm a girl, he wouldn't allow me to do it on my own. I officially have 6 hens now (2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 White Leghorns, and 2 Black Australorps), that I just went...
Okay, so I'm currently working on my rations (I'll be mixing my own - I have all the tools, including my Animal Science textbook, which introduced me to the awesomeness of Pearson Squares!), but I ran across a statement in the book that said do NOT give chicks (for layers) grain - like barley, I...
Would you use Barred Rocks for meat birds? I've heard that they have some sort of jelly layer on top of the skin (or something to that effect) that makes them hard to process.
Or would you only use "meat bird" breeds (like Freedom Rangers, CornishX, etc.)?
Or would you use a different breed...
I'm way putting the cart in front of the horse....but how big should a pig pen and the shelter be for feeder pigs? I'll have seperate areas for farrowing and growing piglets.....and I assume the uncastrated male has to be seperate as well?????? Yep...pretty much....that's what I know about pigs...
Okay, I know this has been asked before, but I wanted to make sure nothing had changed in the few years between posts!
We live in Arizona and I was going to make my coop out of wood - make it look like an old west saloon (I got the idea from LilBizzy's chicken coop plans), with the plan of, by...
Hi there!
My name is AJ (trust me, it's a lot easier to say than my full name) and I am from Arizona. I've been lurking around on BYC for a few weeks, researching for the chickens and turkeys I'll be acquiring next Spring. They'll be just one of my additions to our small ranch to come. We...
Hi there! I have been researching (and researching and researching) chickens and turkeys for a couple of weeks now. I have my coop plans drawn out and almost all of my information straight. This forum and website has been extremely helpful to me, so I thought I'd register.
However, I do have...
