DH am I just bought our very first home on Tuesday! We have a gorgeous craftsman era home with 3 acres and an stream. Now we need to go shopping:
A new car with 4WD
A snow blower
A lawn mower/rider?
So what toys do you mountain men recommend for a city gal turned homesteader? ;)
Is it possible to use deep litter method with a raised coop? We can get a lot of snow in the winters (or none, as this winter is proving) and we are on wet land.
So in perusing coops I noticed a a couple different floor styles: A poured cement floor, raised a few inches on cinder blocks and raised a foot or so off the ground with a ramp down to the run.
So what are the pro/cons of each floor?
We recently cut our cable down to basic, leaving me with late night PBS. Well tonight's program is Inside Nature's Giants: Pythons. They are doing autopsies on two huge pythons and it is.so.cool. They just uncovered the whole reproductive system from yolk sacs, to oviduct and cloaca. While I'm...
I've been browsing coop designs and guys, my hats off to you. Y'all have some great coops. I was thinking it would be awesome if they could have a little common info at the top. Like how many chickens, whether layers or broilers; if plans are available, appx cost of project. I think a little...
Rather, coordinated coop runs and garden beds. I saw a great coop design posted by one of you. It is a coop surrounded by 8 rotating runs. And I can't find the blasted thread again. Any help would be appreciated. I'd love to see your rotating garden beds and chicken runs. I love some good garden...
Does a bachelor pad need to be out of sight and sound from the hens, can it be one or both? Would they be able to roost in the same coop and then just get our to separate runs at night? Is there any difference in care (aside from the fact that I bet they don't need layer feed).
So I've heard this referred to a couple of times. What's the formula? Can you spell it out ala chicken math for dummies? I am getting the sense that it means once you get into chickens they multiply endlessly whether by choice or not. Any way to add more subtraction and division to the...
I want to have a flock of a dozen core birds and then allow them to hatch 20 or so in the spring. But I want to slaughter and store those extra birds in the fall. So while in the summer I'll have around 35, in the winter my flock will be back down to 12. Would a big coop that accommodates 35...
I want to raise chicken for both meat and eggs. We eat about 3 doz eggs/week and about 20 whole birds/year plus some bits n pieces. You guys have me thinking I want twelve hens for eggs. Clearly if I want 20 for meat I will need a few more birds. At least. DH's father raised chickens and says I...
I have this secret fantasy of bringing sustainable, eco- raised, kosher meats to the Pioneer Valley. Despite the abundance of hippies and Kosher Jews in this area, there is no source for good, healthful kosher meats. Where do you get your kosher meats slaughtered and how do you make the extra...
My co parent for my flock will be an amazing four year old girl. We've been leasing a pony this fall and to see my girl around these huge beasts? Wow. She shovels *ahem* right alongside me and is up for any task I can throw at her. She is cautious, confident and brave. She is very proud of...
Pros and cons of keeping a rooster? I've heard they can be dangerous, but that is mostly from old hippie farmers' children who certainly weren't choosing breeds or hand raising chicks. I know they will help to keep the hens in check and can at least sound the alarm of danger. I will be embarking...
... if I only want a dozen, and a variety of breeds? I looked quickly at one of the hatcheries' websites and it seemed that I could only order chicks in 25 count orders. It also looked as if I wouldn't be able to pick and choose breeds. Is there anywhere I can order single chicks and choose the...
Starting out with chickens in the spring and I really want to get a few turkeys to have some great meat at the end of the year. Can I just raise them alongside and in the same home? The chickens will be for eggs and I do not plan to keep a rooster. What are some key things I should be aware of...
Pros and cons? In fact, whats the difference? I think I've gleaned that bantams are smaller, but that's all I've got. How about temperament? I will be caring for these gals with a one and four year old so they best be sweethearts.
We are finally moving into our dream home and what kind of home would it be without some good ole homegrown eggs. So now what? We move the first of the year. Can I just get really cute little fluffy, peepy balls of fun and put em in a box or what? How long until they have to have a real live...
Jumping into chickens next spring with my two girls. As a family of four, we go through approximately 3 dozen eggs/week. I plan to do most of the chicken rearing with my four year old DD so I need more docile breeds. I also want a nice variety and rainbow of eggs to collect. Fancy looking birds...
