    Whoa - crazy, cool egg!

Found this today. It was flat on one side with this crazy imprint. I think a light brahma laid it. edit: she's a very healthy hen who just laid an odd egg, but thanks for the concern Next to regular eggs

I'm in the first egg club...

I really thought we were going to wait until spring but got a surprise this morning. From my Dominique I believe. She's 19 weeks.

I am determined to make these birds edible- not gonna happen update

But I need help. I was given a freezer full of frozen chickens that are best for stewing as they have been in the freezer for a couple years. This is my first experience with a non-grocery store chicken and the first attempt at cooking one in the crock pot could have been better. I cooked it...

I have a frozen chicken situation!

This is strange and I am not really sure where it belongs but I'll try here. Long story short, I ended up with about forty frozen free range chickens from a local guy. They are a couple years old and have been in the deep freeze in ziplock bags. They don't have any freezer burn, but do have a...

    If you have different breeds,

Do you find that they self-segregate? I have 13 total, 5 breeds and they all hang together in their own little groups most of the time. It's kind of funny because they all came in the same batch. I have only 1 dominique and she's pretty independent - she prefers me. And then only 1 EE, which...

    8 wk Lt. Brahmas

Just some photos I took of them this morning. Like the 3 amigos- they always hang out together and sometimes include the EE. They have all developed at different rates in spite of being from the same hatch. He's going to be a big boy when he grows up! This one is still a fuzz head

    Screaming roo...

DH are probably the only people on our road that are amused by this, but there is a rooster somewhere nearby (not ours!) that crows every few seconds all day long. But it doesn't have a very pleasant singing voice. It sounds like a woman screaming. I just crack up every time I hear it - which...

    Chick pics

My Dominique - Panda. Self proclaimed lookout and queen of the young'ens. She is bossy and she bites and attacks already at almost 3 weeks old. The rest of them are RIR and Brown Leghorn and on the other side of the divider are the 4 week old light brahmas and EE. I separate them a couple times...

4 week old light brahmas - pics

Just thought I post some pics of the crew - there are 3 light brahmas and one EE- which they all like to stand on. Guess which one (or 2) is probably a roo This one with the big ol red comb (let's call it #1) and the other one that is in the back of this picture (#2) are the same size, but the...

    My Peanut...runt or bantam?

I got this little one along with the others, I am sure it's a male, but he's so tiny! About half the size of the others. They are 8 day old brown leghorns. He doesn't seem to know he is small, though. Pushes his way right into whatever he wants. Eats like a piggy. All the others have wing...

    Accepting the poop

How quick did you reach the point where you could say "it's just chicken poo" and wash it off and forget about it? I reached it pretty quickly - like the first day. DH has a way to go yet.

Has anyone seen my chicks? USPS Rant...UPDATE in pg2

Because the post office doesn't know where they are. I am livid. I ordered from Meyer and they shipped yesterday morning and they told me to expect the chicks early today. Waited, waited. Called and got tracking number. Called post office which didn't answer phone and finally drove there only to...

    Chicks stretching...

This has to the cutest thing they do IMO. When they stretch out their neck and one leg. DH said it looks like they are posing for the Heisman (football trophy for those who are not football fans GO BUCKS!) So if the one I am suspicious about turns out to be a rooster, I'm going to name him Eddie...

    They mixed up my order

I called the feed store to see if they could tell me what I have and they are light brahmas and easter eggers. Somebody else must have gotten my order and they are trying to figure it out and also why I got shorted. Maybe I'll get some free out of this!

    Some of them arrived...

I picked up my chicks from the feed store, but the RIR's didn't get delivered. Would have been nice to know when I ordered them that they were having trouble getting them in. So for now I have (I think) 3 buff orpingtons and 2 white leghorns. I would love to get some more, but all the hatcheries...
