In the past 5 days I've had 3 chicks die they were going on 4 weeks old....I believe it's from choking on slivers found in my wood shavings/sawdust
Has anyone experienced this problem before?
I ordered (6) day-old hatchlings from Ideal Hatchery...and they've been doing great for these past 3 weeks.
However, a couple of days ago a chick died suddenly...I just saw it no more than 10 minutes earlier and they all were doing great!
Then today (3 days later)...I was watching the chicks...
EDITED: I'd like to raise 7-8 commercial white turkeys for home consumption in a 8x25' coop with bird netting atop.
Since I cannot have them free-range...I'll be providing them with commercial feed and letting them have access to a yard-waste only compost area adjoining their coop which is rich...
Now that they're a week old I'll be removing them from the plastic tote and placing them in a larger brooder that I made using three LARGE cardboard boxes...(6 ft long x 3 ft wide x 3 ft high).
The floor is 1" wood shavings.
I'm hoping dust will not be a MAJOR/MAJOR issue based on just (6)...

My 4 Production Red hens are 20 weeks old and laying...
We're very happy
Their appetites have gotten much bigger this past week and they are doing great!
They have Layer Crumbles and water available 24/7...they also have access to a large enclosure
to free-range morning and late-afternoon...
I have 4- Production Reds that are all starting to lay now @ 20 weeks....beautiful birds and friendly.
I've read that PR/Hybrid birds produce early-on but will burn-out in 2 yrs or so... I can understand this and it's not a problem.
But I've been thinking of starting another coop/run to raise...
Got our first egg from our Production Reds...
Now will she keep laying progressively larger eggs over the next month?

Do we...

But, I'm noticing everday they...
