Thanks, terrielacy.
If you're in the Athens, TN area and see a little red Mustang tooling around with a "My Pet Makes Me Breakfast" bumper sticker, it's me.
I had taken my son to school and when I came home I started picking up and cleaning the house. I had the TV on as I went from room to room thinking this would be another ordinary day. Suddenly, I heard a report about a plane hitting The World Trade Center. With a dustcloth in my hand, I stopped...
I have read that Blue Andalusians are medium egglayers (3 per week). Both of my Blues (who just started laying 6 days ago) have given me 5 eggs. Good girls.
Should I expect this frequency or is it because they just started laying?
I thought this was nice if you are in need of it in the E. Tenn. area:
Don't know if theres a need for this or not. I am voluteering to take all your unwanted poultry. I am a disabled vet and am starting a poultry rescue. My farm name is Feather Haven Farms. I will provide them with a home...
Every night my DH and I head up to the coops to watch the "Chicken Show". Tonight, our DS and his two BFs joined us. These boys are 17, 17 and 16. We had 5 chairs lined up to watch the girls go to bed. We made fun of silly chicken antics, guessed which girl would be the last one in the coop and...
How appropriate. This is my first egg. It is from Ena, one of my Americaunas.
It has a great shape and the shell seems nice and strong. I think it's pretty good for a first try.
This is my newest coop. We just finished it August 29th. It used to set in the woods and was my son's play cabin. Instead of building from scratch or buying one finished, we renovated (evicted squirrels from the eaves) and modified it. We moved it about 600 feet with a rollback from a local...
As I was schlepping groceries in yesterday, I heard the awfulest BA - GOCK, BA - GOCK, BA - GOCK!! I had never heard that before. I've read that hens do that when they lay an egg.
So, I quickly carried in the cold stuff, left the rest in the car & grabbed my cell phone to get that first...
I am thinking about getting a couple of miniature fainting goats and have been doing some research. What I really need to know is how much pasture area would 2 little fainters require? I am going Saturday to look a them. If I decide to get them, she will keep them for me until I have shelter for...
Does anyone know if it would be ok for me to plant monkey grass in my run? The run is dirt now with straw covering. Monkey grass is extremely hardy. I thought it might draw more bugs into the run. I know it is safe for my dogs. I have even seen them picking the berries from it and eating them.
catching crickets for chickens. Although I'm sure it was pretty funny for anyone who happened to see me. I am not much of a cricket catcher. Even my DH got in on the fun.
We moved one of the compost pile to make room for a new chicken coop. As we were forking it over, crickets ran everywhere...
A few days ago, I noticed ants (again) marching up and down the wire to help themselves to my hummingbird feeder. I had previously used vaseline on it but that just melted. I don't know why I grabbed the PAM, but I did. I guess I thought it might make it slippery or something. I sprayed around...
My dad came up for supper tonight. I was telling him about what my chickens had to eat today (tuna salad, mashed banana, greens). He said that if they get too fat they won't lay. Is that true?
My chickens aren't what I would call "fat". They are very healthy and robust.
My 3 gallon waterer is building up scum due to the hot temps. Now I am only filling it halfway since I have to change it so often.
Is there anything I can add to the water that would keep it cleaner and be safe for my chickens to drink?
They are the first to the treat bowl and the last to leave. When they see me headed toward the coop, they pace anxiously back and forth. The only thing they don't like so far is apples. Yesterday I had some cold oatmeal left over. Millie was jumping up and down to see what was in the bowl...
I know this sounds like an EasyGarden question, but since so many of you use DE in your coops, I thought I would try here first. (hope this is the right place to post)
Today, I was lifting strawberry runners (rooted in black 4" cups half burried in the bed) and I also lifted a black widow...
For those of you who use smaller chicken tractors:
Do you use them as permanent housing?
If you do, will they keep the hens warm enough in the winter?
What breeds would be best suited for them?
Just wanted to post a picture of my 4 new hens. They are all about 12 weeks old. The Buff Orps are Goldie (Hawn) & Bette (Midler sp.). The Black Australorpes are Stella ("How Stella Got Her Grove Back") and Pepper (obvious). Everyone is getting along really well. They are still quite camera shy...
Do hens have "tells" when they are about ready to start laying? Last night, one of my blue andalusians (19 wks) payed alot of attention to one of the fake eggs in the nest box. She rolled it several times with her foot & seemed to be very curious. She would stand over it and walk around it...
I thought this would be a fun way to get to know our fellow chicken lovers: (sorry if it's been done before, but I couldn't find it)
1. Do you prefer the mountains or the beach?
2. Sweet or salty snacks?
3. Early bird or night owl?
4. Ford, Chevy, import, etc?
5. Dog or cat person (or both)?
6...
