I have an Easter Egger that has yellow legs and she is the solid color of a New Hampshire with a beard. She laid her first egg yesterday and it was olive green. I was expecting brown eggs because of the legs being yellow.
I thought the legs should be green or slate to get green or blue eggs...
I thought I would try ordering 7 started pullets from Murray McMurray Hatchery. They advertise them to be 15 to 22 weeks old. I am adding them to my current flock and didn't want to start with chicks this time.
I'm worried about what the condition of the pullets will on arrival coming by mail...
I have a blue Ameraucana "Ralph" that is 20 weeks old and has never crowed once. When did your roo start crowing?
Can he be this old and still not crowing?
Most roos I have had, start crowing at 8 to 10 weeks old always.
Are there roos that don't crow?
Here are some pics. Thanks!
I was sure this was a hen and I haven't heard any crowing but I see shiny, pointy feathers coming in on the back area which makes think it's a roo maybe.
If this is a roo, wouldn't it be crowing by now?
We are so excited to have our new bigger coop and run. We have had chickens for 8 years and the old coop was a great first coop but I was ready for a new garden coop/run.
We had coverted our garden shed into the first coop and now we are remodeling it and actually going to use it for a garden...
So.... I've never kept a rooster before myself and I'm helping a good friend with their mix flock of young pullets about 5 monthd old. There are White Leghorns, Barred Rock, Ameraucana, Comets, and Ancona.
Among the flock, we ended up with 3 young ros. So 13 pullets and 3 roos. One is a RIR...
I hatch this hen under a broody back in May. As a chick, she was yellow and black like a Black Australorp. The eggs came from a local farm. They don't have any Black Australorps, only BOs, BRs, EEs and RIRs. Her comb is small for 27 weeks and she not laying yet either. Any ideas?
I was wondering which of your chicken breeds laid first and how old they were? For me, it was my RIR "Rose" at 23 weeks. Then my Buff Orpington "Daisy" at 25 weeks. Then my Ameraucana "Jasmine" at 26 weeks. The rest haven't started yet.
Out of 30 eggs, 25 hatched. My broody had 8 eggs with 100% hatch. In the bator, all hatched expect 5 eggs. Not a bad ratio. My broody eggs hatched 1 day sooner than my bator eggs. Maybe the hot weather here in FL helped that. The chicks are from eggs that are mixed breed, RIR, BR and some pure...
I have an RIR "Rosalee" that is broody. I have been ignoring her broodiness for two weeks but I am finally giving into her and I put some fertile eggs under her on 05/02/2015. I faithfully have a broody hen every year in Spring for some reason and always tell myself, don't give in to her...lol...
This 6 week old pullet looks different from my other ee babies...could this be an Araucana with a tail? The legs and feet are yellow and it has a pea comb and clean face....no beard. Do Araucanas lay blue eggs? She's very pretty regardless!
These pullets were born on 07/03/13 and I bought them a week ago. I've never had Wheaton Ameraucanas before. Does it look like they will turn out to be Wheaton?
I keep going back and forth on this chick....one day it looks pullet and then I think cockerel.....what do you guys think? The feather coloring is throwing me off...looks like a pullet to me but the comb says cockerel..right? Thanks!
I set 41 shipped eggs in the bator today. I'm so excited. I let them rest for 24 hrs first, small end down. They all arrived safe and sound yesterday afternoon. None were broken. I ordered Black Australorp, Welsummer, Lavender Orps, Ameraucanas, and Black/Lavender Ameraucanas.
I just couldn't wait to hatch out spring chicks so no time like the present! I'll call them Valentine's Day chicks! I ordered eggs on ebay....Black Australorp, Ameraucana, Lavender/Black Ameraucanas, and Welsummer! I've always done well with shipped eggs. Now just waiting for them to arrive this...
For me, my love for chickens began years ago as a child about 10 years old. We had purchase some property in the country and one Easter, my parents gave me a basket of LIVE chicks...RIRs and BRs! I was used to getting marshmellow peeps but live peeps...WOW! I fell in love with the little fuzz...
My Chickens have been spoiled since they hatched and even still in the shell developing Fussing over them as they grew up and now I go out every morning, turn on their light before sunrise, scoop the poop up before they jump down off their roost so they don't get their feet dirty. I'm at their...
My hens are 8 months old now and most lay daily. I've observed that my Lavender Orp is laying maybe twice a week only.
Does an Orp's body produce eggs more slowly? She doesn't appear to be molting and I am giving them extra light in the mornings with the shorter days. Anything I should do...
I have a 6 month old black sex link hen that likes to sit on her egg for awhile (couple of hours) after she lays it and then finally gets off the nest. She is starting to go broody?
Most of my hens get off the nest right after they lay the egg.
