I read in another forum that some people feed cat food to their chickens to promote feather growth.
My chickens have been losing feathers, and I'm not sure why. They don't seem to be moulting and no sign of bugs. I'm wondering if maybe it's their diet?
Maybe I should add more protein to...
I'm not sure if I have a bug problem or not? I have four hens and three have missing feathers on their necks and chest. One just has it on her chest.
I tried looking for any sign of bugs etc. I didn't see anything moving around. On one of the black chicks it seemed like she had white speck...
Is there a simple and easy way to explain how to grow your own sprouts?
The websites I am finding all our seed companies that sell kits to grow your own, along with their seeds.
Isn't there some way to do it without buying an expensive kit?
Thanks for any info!
Can someone tell me the sex of these chickens? I was told they were hens when I got them, I'm hoping they were right!
So far we haven't seen any eggs, but I'm hoping it's just due to the winter?
No crowing either, but I just want to be safe and get an opinion!
Thanks!!
Did anyone watch the Food Network Thanksgiving special with Alton Brown cooking the turkey?
I know this board is for chickens, but his concept probably applies to chickens too!
He was talking about how to buy a turkey and what to look for on the labels.
When he got to Free Range, he said it...
I put a red heat light in the coop last night and it didn't seem to make any difference in the temperature?
I bought a reptile type heating bulb, a 200 watt. Is there a different kind of heat light I should have gotten?
Maybe this was more of a basking light, I threw away the box for it...
I'm a city girl with chickens! On Craigslist there are wheat straw bales for sale, which I wanted to get some sort of bales of hay or straw for some insulation for the winter.
Will this do? What is the difference in hay and straw?
I feel really silly!!
Since getting my chicks and having them outside, my sparrows have just been going crazy around the chicken coop!
I've spilled some of the feed outside of the cage when I was refilling the feeders so they've gotten a taste of the crumbles!
So I filled my birdfeeder with chicken feed the other...
I'm going to be putting in a nest box this weekend with my pullets, they range from about 13 weeks to 6 weeks old.
How do I keep them from just sitting on top of it and pooping on it etc.
Is it too early to put it in? I don't want them to think it's just a place to sit on etc.
Thanks!
Would chickens eat any last remaining petunias, marigolds etc?
I have some remaining that still look good, I wanted to check if they would be ok for them or not?
I recently got my baby chickens and I live in the city, I can't tell you how many people have asked me....you mean you are going to keep them outside in the winter?!!
I live in Wisconsin, it does get cold. But I think hundreds of years ago, before electricity etc, people did keep chickens...
The last couple days one of my bantams have been making a small little depression in the sand and seems to sit in there a few minutes.
She is only about 13 weeks, so I was told when I got her. There are two others I got at the same time, and they aren't doing this.
I'm just finishing up my...
I brought home 3 bantam cochins and one had been in beat up by a rooster already.
It is missing it's tail feathers and some neck feathers. The two other bantams that are with it keep picking at the new feathers that are trying to grow back in.
How can I get them to stop and let her get her...
I bought some cracked corn for my new chicks, they are between 4-10 weeks old. But I also want to add something else to it.
If I'm going to the feed store, do I just buy oats or wheat made for horses?
Sorry, I'm a city girl!! They don't have a pre-packaged scratch mix at the pet store...
I got my chicks last week. Three, 9 week old bantams and 3 pullets about 3 weeks old.
I've tried the yogurt, oatmeal, apple peas. They don't go for anything!
I was looking forward to the yogurt frenzy!
I realize it's only the first week, they are probably just nervous and it will come in...
After searching and going around with online orders that didn't work out I finally found some local chicks!
And I'm totally not ready! Well yes I am! But nervous now!
They are varying ages, from 1 week EE, 4 week light Brahamas, 4 week, 4 week Delaware
and 3, 9 week old black Cochin...
I'm placing an order with Ideal today so I was searching some back posts, looking for reviews on Ideal.
I noticed some people said they arrived with 'packing peanuts' RIR, what is this?
Thanks!
I had ordered some pullets that were to be delivered to be mid September and now the farmer bailed on me!!
They were to be 8 week old, I had wanted to skip the chick stage.
But now I'm back to square one, and thinking maybe I will order some chicks.
Is it too late? I live in Wisconsin, at...
