Hi. Last week I lost 2 chicks in two days (13 weeks old). I saw one was weak so I brought it inside and it died within a couple of hours. The other thing I noticed was clear watery stool at the end. I went out the next morning to check and found one on the ground. It started shaking (siezure)...
My Isabrown has 6 babies. They follow her around the yard and everyone is getting along swimmingly.
Tonight I was closing the hatches and "tucked" everybody in. I noticed my Silkie hen all puffed out, laying on the floor. Considering I have another Isa that has gone broody, I do NOT need...
Twenty days ago I move my first broody hen on 15 eggs. I left her completely alone with the exception of filling her food and water dishes. Today I decided to check the eggs and see if there was anything happening. I was shocked, surprised and oh so happy to see a little wet chick stumbling...
My broody hen is nearing the end of 21 days (Tuesday). She has been locked in a large dog crate which has been kept in my coop with the rest of her flock.
A little background before I ask my questions; My coop is divided into two large rooms and one side is divided into another two rooms. My...
I went to check on my eggs before jumping on the treadmill and I saw lots of rocking and heard lots of chirping. I went back after my run and saw TWO PIPS on my silkie eggs. There is a lot of rocking from the other eggs and more chirping. Tonight is the beginning of day 20.
This is my second...
So I have a Isa Brown hen that has gone broody, I think. This has all happen in the past 2 days.
This is what I have observed:
1) Snapping at my hand when I get to close to her in the nest
2) Not leaving the nest, even at night
3) Big explosive bowel movements once she comes off to eat...and...
I checked my ladies around 8pm and noticed two of them in the nesting box. I let them be and thought maybe they are having a late lay (usually they are all done before noon). I went back around 1130pm with flashlight in hand and they are still sitting there. Usually they are all up in the...
So I am on day 7 of my second attempt at hatching. Of the 11 eggs (my flock) I set all of them have bouncing babies inside. This is compared to 2 of 12 during my first attempt.
I have three silkie eggs that I am really pinning my hopes on.
Can someone explain the differences in these breeds? How can you tell if you actually have an Ameraucanas? Also, how can hatcheries offer Ameraucanas (by name) but really you are ending up with EEs (is this not very misleading and false advertising)?
Not that it makes a big difference to me as...
My order of hatchery choice, heritage breed package arrived today. First, let me say I am in love . Now I would like to know what I have. The heritage breeds available throught my hatchery are: Buff Orpington, Danish Brown Leghorn, Ameraucanas (which I learned tonight are probably EEs), Buff...
I set some eggs 23 days ago. At day 3 and 7 two eggs were veining nicely. Around the 15 day mark one egg was losing its veins, no movement, etc. I took it out and sure enough it did not develop past a kidney bean.
On day 18 my lone egg was rocking and I was excited at what the next 3 days...
I bought these two roosters at an auction sale this past weekend. The only information I know is that they are bantams.
It doesn't really matter because I think they are just gorgeous but for curiosity sake can anyone help?
I have been taken in by the Silkie breed and this past weekend I bought a White Silkie hen and rooster.
I have searched the site looking and reading all things silkie. At present the pair are in a extra large dog kennel and are quite skittish when I come around. It has only been one day so I...
So my lone egg is due to hatch on Thursday (it was set March 19 evening). Tonight is the finish of daya 17. Do I stop turning it tonight or do I turn it tomorrow and then stop tomorrow night?
Thanks
I have 11 eggs from my own flock in the incubator (my first time). Today is day four and impatient me, I candled.
In two eggs (one brown, one white) I saw very clear veins and little budding embryos :-) The two eggs I saw veins in are very easy shells to read (hard and solid). The remainder of...
Hi everyone. I am from Alberta, Canada. Two years ago (give or take) my family and I moved out of the city to an acreage. The first spring on our little farm I got chickens for my chicken coop.
I have loved every minute of it and this year I am hoping to add a selection of Heritage Birds to my...
