    Black Appenzeller Spitzhaubens

I have 2 cockerels and 3 pullets that came from Greenfire Farms for sale. They all have some white leakage. Their age varies from 8 to 12 weeks old. I have been told that these birds would probably produce offspring without leakage. I am not an expert and can make no guarantee based on...

    too much heat !

My 250 W heat lamp bulbs are producing too much heat. I have been trying to locate some smaller watt bulbs that will fit in my lamps. Does anyone have a source for smaller red heat bulbs? Or does anyone know if the bulbs sold for reptile heat will fit the standard brooder lamp?

    multiple breed coop

I'm rebuilding/adding on/something! I'd like to design a building/s for housing 5 breeds separately plus a separate area for extra roosters. There should be attached outside runs. I have a summer breeding/brooding/grow out area so I don't need that. Has anyone built something similar or seen...

    How about this weather!

So we've had a warm spring and tonight it's supposed to be 22. I have 5 weekers in an outside brooder "cabin" with a heat light... they should be fine... unless the electricity goes out. I cut down the ventilation a bit and they should be fine but... anyone else worrying tonight?

    Christmas Coops

I've been searching for pictures of Christmas coops from past years and haven't turned any up. I plan to do some Christmas cheer for my yard and thought it would be fun to share our pictures. I'll post some pictures when I get it done.

    Is anyone using their feathers?

I wondered if anyone uses their chicken's feathers? Do you gather them up or pluck them out? Would plucking mess up their molt cycle? I just collect them from the ground and display in a wooden bowl. Our ancestors used them for pillows, etc. DH says they killed the birds to do that? Just...

    Bidding problems... help needed!

I hope this is posted in the correct place and also where I might get help! I've been trying to bid in the auction section. Last spring I missed NYred eggs because every bid I placed came back with the message "cannot bid under the starting bid listed" or "cannot bid under the current bid". I...

Shipping adult bird concerns at the buyer end

I've been considering buying a couple of cockerels or young roosters and having them shipped. What are the pros/cons of this. Do the birds suffer from much stress? Are they in good health at arrival? If the are quarantined 30 days (even with NPIP certification) is my flock really safe? How far...

    tricky spiral leg bands?

Is there a trick to getting these on? I found it very difficult. I did a hen and three week old chicks... not good. 8 hens, a roo and 19 chicks to go... I don't think this is a good idea! I must not be doing something right (I hope)! I considered zip strips and velcro but didn't think I could...

run design and disease spread by wild birds

I am adding 3 more coops and runs to my existing coop and run. They will share a common interior fence/fences. All the runs but one are covered with net but I plan to use the one on the end for Guineas, who will free range all day and hopefully fly back into their "space" in the evening for...

    dusting spot

My chickens try to dust all over their run but the ground is not very sandy. Would it work to make them a sand/gravel box for dusting... like a child's sandbox?

    Someone tell me quick!

how to manage all the newbies coming my way! I have 6 beautiful Dominiques that lay very generously. Also 4 RedCaps (one a very mean rooster... that attacks me when I'm filling his food trough!). Then we were gifted with a Silkie and an Appenzeller-Spitzhaben (there was a rooster but the RedCap...

    the Fluffer Nutter

We have one lone silkie in a flock of Dominicks. Last year she laid an egg a month.. less than an inch long with no yolk. This year she is laying every other day... the eggs are slightly larger... still with no yolk. Anyone else have this happening?
