This chick came out of a medium size, medium brown egg(no speckles). It is a silvery grey, has 4 toes, and hairy legs(a bit of brownish on sides of body... see pic). Any ideas, I don't know any of the breeds I'm hatching really and unfortunately had one little yellow guy die last night because I...
I've been staring at my eggs for about 20-30 minutes a clip(and 3 tylenol) and got lucky enough to see my first pip happen! Now I can relax a bit and just check up on the eggs every few minutes or so!!
I've got 13 mixed variety eggs in my homemade bator that are alive! 2 of the 16 viables didn't make it past the first few days and 1 other I think didn't make it past about a week or so but I left it in for now because I'm only 99.9% sure its gone..... I'd die if I opened it and was mistaken...
Check out this link for basically a "live" candleing picture of eggs in development "without the shell" on a daily basis. Click on the day number for photo. Helps a lot to know what to look for, and this is pretty straight forward!

Hi, of course everyone would prefer to brag about hatch rate numbers, as would I(!), but I'm not the type to inflate these numbers as all of you know, many people do! Whether they play golf and take a "Mulligan"(free shot that doesn't count toward your "real" score), don't count that few minutes...
I have 19 of 30 eggs left in the bator(11 clears disposed of). 15 have obvious movement at day 10, but 4 are still unclear due, I think, to their detatched air cells making it difficult to turn and see embryos at different angles. Does anyone else have this problem. I am leaving them in and am...
I posted this in another link but figured I'd share w/all if they hadn't read that link!
I've even used a "Pringles" potato chip can slid over any lamps light bulb(lamp shade removed) with an oval cut out of the bottom just a hair smaller than egg size so they can't fall through. Works great...
Very clear photos of chick development during incubation stages. Days are noted in paragraph above pics!

Out of my 30 eggs(15 shipped and 15 local farm, both several varieties), I candeled and tossed 9 which were either infertile or never started growing, have 6 questionables which were tough to candle and see if anything was happening, and 15 that were moving around! Can't wait to see what...
This link gives a good idea of what might be expected at certain stages of egg development when you candle. For Newbies and anyone else interested!

I see many posts where people get temp spikes and fan the bator a bit too cool it down.... I think a problem with doing that is that the internal temps of eggs do not cool down that quickly and take some time. By cooling the incubator down quickly like this, it generally will drop its...
After a failed first attempt at hatching due high temps, I candeled my second batch(well only 4 of 30), but 2 were clear and 2 were darker and were moving(like breathing motion!). I left the clears in there because I didn't want to disturb the temps of the growing ones since I'm using a homemade...
Went to the feed store to check out their chicks today and saw the cutest bright yellow ducklings! 4 bucks apiece, but they were soooo cute...., had to contain my composure, turn around(after a few minute of gawking!), and walk out empty handed. Just not sure how deep I would've got myself into...
Although not many of us can wait to get our eggs in the incubator to "start" the 21 day clock, it is better to take your time and get the incubator set-up and located in a prime spot before any attempt. You may only lose a day or two getting conditions in the incubator just right, as opposed to...
After a failed first attempt, I rebuilt my homemade wooden box still-air incubator by installing a 12v computer fan powered by an 18v power source from an old cable tv "black-box" unit(all parts free from things out of the garage I hadn't tossed out yet!). The power differential seems to work...
I have 2 hatch dates 8 days apart in my incubator. After day 18, I still have to open it to turn the later put in eggs a few times a day. It seems that everyone says this is an absolute no-no, but doesn't a hen have to get up and do her business the last three days also before "she" explodes?! I...
I just posted this on another topic, but if you want to hatch eggs and haven't the money to invest in an incubator, here is about as good a way as any to be on your way to hatching eggs with little or no money down!
If I had no other means, I'd get a decent size cardboard box(18"wx18"hx30"l...
