I am finding a few feathers around the yard. I looked the girls over but nothing stands out. I know they molt, haven't had it happen yet, and I was wondering if any members had pictures of their hens when they molted?
Hubby and I are redoing the coop. I want the nesting boxes inside. However it's only 4 feet tall so we can't get into the coop to get the eggs. Is there a way to put them inside and cut out a little door on the outside? I just want the door to be flush with the coop wall.
Not sure if that...
My EE is not laying any eggs going on 4 days now. She hasn't molted and is about a year old. I'm in California, it's not been real hot but in the 80's. They have water, grit/oyster shells, food and laying pellets available. Plus they free range. Any ideas or suggestions?
I am going to a breeders in a few days and wanted to get more easter eggers. She informed us that they are 5 weeks old but aren't sexed. Our city ordinances don't allow for roosters, so is there a way to ID hens/roosters at that age for that breed?
Wasn't sure what else to call it. LOL Since we now have 4 chickens we are getting more eggs and I offered 2 friends some. They both passed on free eggs. When I asked why they said that it was because they weren't the normal white eggs. I even explained that these would taste better and are from...
Right now the run has grass and I know that won't last long. What's best for a run floor to use in wet weather?
Also with it being grass right now, how can I keep the smell down? I don't want the neighbors complaining.
Whats the best way to spread the DE in the coop? We have a wooden floor in one area and the rest is dirt/grass.
Also do I use it in the coop and nesting box with the pine shavings?
Last week we got our first 2 chickens. Then we expanded the run and got 2 more from the same guy. Do they remember the other chickens? I thought there'd be some grumpiness or a pecking order dispute but I got nothing. They all huddled around each other.
We named the coop The Funky Chicken. The letters are painted and drying at the moment. Just need to seal them and put them up on the coop.
We expanded the run to 9'x12'. We also contacted the guy we got the chickens from last week and went and got 2 more from him. Is it possible that the...
We've only had the chickens for a bit over a week now. They've been doing great! Atleast I hope so. They seem to have a pattern for laying, I have been keeping track so we'll see if I'm right.
I've been itching to expand their run. We've got the room for it and hubby agreed to do it tomorrow...
I joined about a week ago and didn't even see this part of the forum LOL I was so focused on the information in the other sections. So I appologize!
Hubby and I got 2 chickens last Sunday and have been enjoying them. We live in Fremont, California. Hope to find other Bay Area peeps on here...

Hi all, newbie here! Hubby and I have a few questions on a coop.
Hubby wants to compost the chicken poop for our garden. However we are unsure of how to do the floor for the coop. Do we have to have a raised floor? Can the coop be on the ground?
Are there any members from California who have...
