Up for sale are the fertile eggs from our rafter of heritage turkeys. The price is $2 per egg, min order of $20 please.
The flock is Royal Palm, Slate, Narragasset, White, and Bronze. The main tom is the Royal Palm, so most of the babies are palm mixes of some sort.
The coloration of the...
Two years ago we started with four chickens in a little coup behind our suburban home.
Two years later we live in a shack in the woods with chickens, ducks, and turkeys.
We just decided to toss all of the DIY brooders and incubator. After a month of research and a drive to Millen GA we are now...
I found a gaggle of 25 Pekin ducks on craigslist for $150. I figured that was a great deal! So we drove out last night to pick them up. They are approx 13 weeks old (easter ducks)..
Ugh..
They are battered, brown, and small. Poor critters. I will post some pictures later of my pekins side by...
Good day!
I am in search of a broody hen or two.
If you have a small back yard flock with no roosters, then you are probably annoyed with the crazy hen that won't leave the nest! But, she is exactly what I need to sit on some eggs!
Can pay cash, or trade for a non broody laying hen.
I...
Greetings ,
I like numbers and stats. And I like reading the experience of others. If you are like me, than this is for you.
The birds - Moyers Speckled Broilers. http://www.moyerschicks.com/catalog/colored-broilers/speckled-cockerel. I ordered 25, 29 showed up, 24 made it to the butchers...
Today was slaughter day for the last 10 birds out of Meyers Fry Pan special. There have been a number of questions posted about the Fry pan special, but not to many answers. So here is my attempt to give some other folks some useful information.
These birds were born on 9/30/14. That makes...
Greetings.
My wife and I will be processing 10-12 DP chickens on 1.24.15 at our home in Eustis Florida. We do it outside, by hand. Pretty rustic by todays standards.
Anyone local interested in learning how, or watching? I spent hours watching youtube before my first slaughter, I would have...
Greetings.
My first couple butchers were rough!! My wife and I have it down a little better now, and would be willing to host another chickener or two to teach them how to slaughter, and process their first couple birds.
We are located in Eustis Florida. We do everything at home. And it is...
How many of you are grinding your own chickens and turkeys?
What parts do you use?
We have 15 birds to process tomorrow. What do you think of this plan?
1) Skinning rather than plucking. I can skin a bird in under 60 seconds.
2) Harvesting the wings and legs for slowcooking and pulling meat...
Greetings,
I need a gun.. And I need advice.
I am former military, so I know how to operate a gun safely. But in the army they issue you a gun, and teach you how to use it.. They don't teach you how to select one!
I will be using the gun for the following.
1) Harvesting my pigs with...
Greetings.. And welcome to The Bear Sting thread!!
A few nights ago we lost a turkey to a bear. I came onto back yard chickens hoping to find some good solid technical information and reviews about electrical fencing and bear deterents. I found lots of "sorry for your losses" and "install a...
Date 11/6/14
Location Eustis FL (just north of Orlando)
The victim - a 30 lb BB White Turkey
The scene - The unknown subject (unsub), climbed up an old 5' field fence, then attacked our turkey enclosure. It appears to have grabbed ahold of the fence, and pulled it out at the staples.. It...
We are done with the coop and run for the roos.. We built an 8X8 coop, and a 15X20 run. This will be the area for the meat chicken and roos.. The ladies are free range in the rest of the yard.
Kind of funny though.. We got the Meyers "fry pan special".. For a mere .59 per chicken!! And then we...
Hello there.
I slow cooked three roos yesterday. After they were cooked through I strained off the stock/broth and picked the carcasses clean.
I put the big bowl of stock into the fridge, in an attempt to solidify the fat, so I could scrape it off the top.
Instead, the ENTIRE BOWL of broth is...
Greetings.
I am in the "total useage" camp of farming and poultry. I would prefer not to waste anything! (after all, that is why I am doing this, and not relying on big box stores and factory farms)
I have read lots of posts on people feeding the offal and entrails back to the flock. What is...
Hello BYC.
I live down here in Florida and want to get an early start on another batch of Meat Turkeys.
But, I can't find anyone with availability of broad breasted poults.
Ideal, Stromberg, Mcmurray, Meyer, efowl are all out.
Which breeders typically have them available in late fall...
Seems only fair to eat our pests after they eat our chickens.
Any good raccoon recipes? Can you even eat coyote or bobcat? Snakes?
I won't even ask about eating Hawk, as I am sure that is illegal!!
Here are pictures of our first harvest. It was a small RIR cockrel, dressed at just over 2lbs. It was my first slaughter, we let him sit for 48 hours, brined him, sit another 24. Then trussed him up and roasted him at 350 for 55 minutes. My wife and I were both thrilled with the results!!
At the end of the county fair their is typically an auction of the animals.
Do any of you source your new blood by buying up the best of show or best looking hens / roosters?
Seems like a win/win. I would be supporting local agriculture and the 4H. And I would be getting some birds that are...
The turkeys are getting big. And we are leaving town!!
So i had to make another brooder box last night. This will make it easier on our house sitter, as poop won't accumulate nearly so quick with only four turkeys per brooder!
This is a monster, 60" wide, 32" deep, 28" tall in the back...
