My Turkey, Lu, Laid a Weird Egg

My turkey, Lu, left me a mysterious egg! On the left is an example of a normal egg she offers me. Off white, speckled with dark brown and shiny. Yesterday I go to take care of her and find this magical egg she squeezed out! Picture is horrible quality, but the right egg is much whiter than her...

Guinea Hen/Chicken Crosses (Apparently it is possible)

My rooster is really into one of our guinea hens. Like, they are always together. He sits on her. She picks things off his waddle. ...They even have some romance. I read online that they can actual crossbreed. So I wanted to hatch some of her eggs...anyone have an idea of the gestation period?

How many guinea fowl can I get?

My coop is 14x14 feet. Currently it houses a rooster, two hens, and four baby chicks. Tomorrow is a chicken show and my family wants to get more guinea fowl . How many guineas can I get without overcrowding the coop? The guineas will be released in a week to free range with our other birds.

Something good to put down in a coop/run?

Since grass doesn't grow, what's something good to put down in a coop that will make it less muddy and be good for the chickens to scratch in?

Homer the One Eyed Chick (with an adorable picture!)

So my hen had five chicks hatch: Winifred, Gus, Eunice, Gladys, and Homer. Homer is a very special little chick. I think he hatched early because when I first saw him, he was bleeding really bad and still had his egg sac attached to him. I was going to put him out of his misery when he looked up...

    Homer the Broken Chick

So my hen has had four chicks hatch so far. The first three, Winifred, Gus, and Eunice, are all doing very well. Now the fourth, his name is Homer, is a little bit broken. I don't know if he hatched too early or what happened, but when I first saw him, I noticed one of his eyes was clouded over...

How long do hens continue to sit after the first chick hatches?

My hen's first chick, Winifred, hatched about twenty one hours ago. So far, she has three chicks, Winifred, Eunice, and Gus. I believe that another egg or two might be hatching and I was just wondering how much longer she'll continue to sit. I don't want anything bad happening to the unborn babies.

Edna and the Babies (with pictures <3)

So far, my hen has hatched two chicks (more are currently hatching) and I just wanted to share a few pictures. Their names are Winifred and Gus (and I had them on the block BRIEFLY just so I could snap a picture of them in the light. Then they went right back toddling to the nest)

When do I put out the water and feeder?

So today my hen, Edna's, eggs have decided to start hatching. There is one chick so far, I saw its little butt poking out as Edna readjusted herself on the nest. I have a chick feeder and chick waterer but when do I put them out?

Ugh! Waiting is so hard! (Hearing peeping from the chicken coop)

So I went in to feed my chickens this morning and from the red wooden dog house my hen sits in, I heard the merry sound of peeping coming from inside. Gosh, this is even harder than waiting three weeks for them to hatch. I know one, her name is Winifred, was beginning to hatch around seven last...

Day 21 and no signs of hatching :(

So my hen, Edna, has been sitting on about nineteen eggs that I have periodically been checking with various methods such as candling (which has shown some success). I first noticed her sitting on August 1st, but I'm not sure how long before that she had been so I said July 31st just to be safe...

Day 21 tomorrow and still no "pips" today?

So my hen, Edna, is sitting on a clutch of nineteen eggs (I didn't realize she was on so many until she was off eating for about three minutes today). While she was being grumpy, I went and checked on the eggs. No one has any pips in them yet and now I'm starting to worry. Could they all have...

At what day do eggs begin to pip?

My hen is currently sitting on nineteen eggs (yeah, I know, that's a lot. I didn't realize until I actually counted today) and today is either day nineteen or day twenty. When I went outside and looked under her and lifted up a few of the eggs, I heard no chirping from within (except maybe a...

What exactly is "medicated" chicken feed?

For years, I've been against getting it in fear it had hormones that would make my chickens grow into Hulks. I've always gone for the non-medicated because I thought it was healthier. Today I actually began to look into it and started wondering, should I switch to medicated? My rooster has had a...

My rooster, Gilman, makes the grossest poos. Is this normal? (don't worry, it's picture-less)

So my rooster, Gilman, is around a year old and has, since I've gotten him, made the grossest poops ever. Like, I'll let him out of his cage and he'll stop and go "PLURK!" (that's the noise it makes) and this liquid diarrhea shoots out of him. Other than that, he has seemed perfectly fine. Could...

Please Help! (Trying to convince my mom to let me keep my baby chicks)

So to make a long story short, I forgot to collect the chicken eggs because I was house-sitting and my hen decided to go broody. We are at about 17-18 days gestation and at first, my mother was open to letting me keep the chicks but then today she pulled me aside and informed me that "I had to...

My Golden Comet has a huge nest...

God knows how many eggs she is sitting on, I thought it was thirteen but when I briefly lifted her up and counted (which I did for only fifteen seconds) I saw like eighteen. But they are all under her and she looks like a pancake flattened out on top of them. Like, no one is sticking out or...

Survival Stories for Chicken Eggs (Like hatches you weren't sure were going to be successful but ult

I am in real need of some confident boosting stories. I'm on my first hatch in several years and now that I am old enough (I'm eighteen now, I was around nine back then) I've begun to candle the eggs under my hen. For some reason, I have myself convinced (maybe just as a way of not getting my...

Is it okay to candle often? (With the exception of after Day 18)

Just as a general rule of thumb, is it okay to candle every other day after Day 10 with the exception of after Day 18?

Anxiously Awaiting Hatchers United (Please share your stories about your impending hatches)

Please feel free to share your stories about your sitting hen or your running incubator! I'm currently on day fifteen (though it could be fourteen) of my hen and her clutch of several eggs.
