I'm new to turkey keeping with three 10 week old Narragansetts. I'd like to add a couple more and wonder if I should expect the same issues integrating new turkeys and I do when I integrate new chickens. I know about quarranting new birds but after that, what should I expect?
I went out to put the guineas and chickens back in their coops this evening and the guineas had put themselves to bed! Hooray! This is the first time they've gone back into their coop by themselves. Next thing you know they'll be coming out by themselves too and I'll be superfluous! Makes...
After three days with the door open and no outward movement, I flushed the guineas out this morning. They were so excited! They also acted like they had no idea how they got into this fantastic new world and expressed no inclination to go back in all day. They flew around like crazy and had a...
If you free range your flock, how long did you keep your new birds penned up in their coop before turning them out to free range? Just curious how different people handled this. Thanks!
My guineas are still locked in their coop, pre-release. I was in there today to stir their bedding a little and they freaked out, wouldn't stay up on their perch out of the way and started flying around. One decided my head looked like a good spot and ended up scratching the devil out of my...
I moved my 12 guineas out of their brooder box in my living room and into their coop this afternoon. I think they're happier & I know I am. The first night's always the toughest, isn't it?! Hopefully they'll all still be there and be content in the morning!
This is an idle question, as it hasn't actually happened to me yet but, when it comes time to refurbish a guinea flock reduced by predators, do you have to deal with the various integration issues common amongst chickens or are guineas more accepting of newcomers?
FYI - My Pet Chicken has a deal on 25 female chicks for $41.50 including shipping. You can choose Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Rhode Island Reds or what they refer to as a Rainbow Assortment. They're shipping in September. I don't know how long it will last but if you're looking for fall chicks...
I am finally settled on the little farm in Virginia. There are lots of trash filled outbuildings and I have chosen to turn this one into a goat/chicken house -
It's a huge mess but I am going to make the left side into the goat pen. The door to the far right will be the chicken coop and...
After a crazy week, I've accepted a position as caretaker of a small farm in sw Virginia. After 31 years living here, I'm selling my house and all my possessions in Texas and moving next month. I really agonized about my chickens and finally decided that the smarter thing for both me and my...
I spent the day today recovering my enclosure with hardware cloth after coming down this morning to find one poor dead 4 week old chick in the run with a missing leg. Take it from me, when you read that chicken wire is not sufficient - believe it! Now I have Chicken Fort Knox and hope it will...
Went out to the chick's temporary enclosure this morning to find my big, beautiful, friendly red sex link chick (4 weeks old) dead in the pen, missing a leg.
I knew better than to leave them out there but they are so much happier when I don't haul them in and out morning and night I decided...
My nine 4 week olds in their temporary quarters -
They are so happy to be outside with room to fly!
I just threw them a handful of grass so they'd settle down long enough to get their picture taken!
2 sweet BTW japanese banties, 2 buff brahma banties, 2 golden sebrights, 2 silver spangled...
I started out with this:
It's a frame for a raised garden bed with a sort of cage down in it. The chicks are killing the grass and tilling up the soil for me as well as providing a bit of fertilizer.
Today I pulled it back out, added a couple of doors for easier access and raised it up on...
I've been putting my 3 week old chicks out in this enclosure every day for the entire day -
It's basically a 4' x 8' portable run made of 2" x 2" lumber and chicken wire, topped with a blue tarp, sitting in a raised bed frame.
I spent the whole afternoon today working in the next town...
I made this portable run that fits down in a new raised bed. I've been putting my 3 week old chicks in here every day and only bringing them in at night pending the completion of their coop. I've got two other beds like this that are new this year. I'm thinking about not planting this one...
So, I decided to take the chicks out to play in the yard for a little bit. Gathered them all up in a laundry basket for transport, grabbed my book, went to grab the basket and something just didn't seem right. Counted the chicks and sure enough, one was missing! One of the little BTW Japanese...
