    frayed feather (and molting) questions

Do feathers turn white or at least fade before they fall out? Can birds continue to lay every day while molting (moulting?)? Do feathers usually get frayed well before molting? I really don't think my hens are molting so this is the question Im most interested in I have three golden comet hens...

    ruined muffins. salvageable?

I made blueberry muffins. I took a bite of one and realized that once again I used baking soda instead of baking powder. Everytime I use this recipe I use baking soda. I never mix up soda and powder on any other recipe, but for some reason I make these wrong everytime. Now I have 2 dozen (baked)...

How long does it take for calcium to get into the egg shells?

My girls have layer pellets mixed with 20% crumbles and free choice oyster shell. They don't seem that into the oyster shell and have started laying thin shelled eggs. One cracked this morning and they ate it. I mixed oyster shell with some sour cream for them in order for their calcium intake...

Should I be worried about mercury in canned tuna or is it okay to give my hens canned tuna (in water not oil) as a treat?

    mint extract

Does anyone here make it? I have a bunch in the garden that I can use, but I don't know whether I need to dry it first or not. I did a trial with fresh not-dried leaves and vodka but its all brown and Im not sure if that means its rotten or if it's supposed to be like that. It tastes sort of...

    wrinkly egg

One of my hens lays eggs with a wrinkly end. She's been laying since august and maybe skipped 8 days so far and has a red comb. Her eggs are usually a little weird at the end but I read that wrinkles across the middle might mean she's sick. She was laying more perfect eggs for a few weeks but...

    woodchuck behavior

Around early or mid april a woodchuck moved in to my neighbors backyard. First time a woodchuck has ever been around. It dug its den under her shed which is three feet from our fence. Of course she thinks its cute. It ate all my snow peas and started digging under my shed. I had my grandpa lined...

    another hawk/falcon question

I heard my hens screaming the loudest I've heard them and wings flapping. Then a falcon/hawk flew off empty handed (clawed). Im almost positive it was a falcon. But anyways all my chickens are fine. But my question is after a failed attempt will the bird try again or learn to pick on something...

    hopping roo

My rooster was yanked out of the coop by the leg by a raccoon a week ago and he's still hopping around. He will put his other foot don't or limp on it occassionally. How long should I wait to see if this will heal? I have two roo's so putting him down would be wicked sad but not overly so.

    developing bad habits.

I leave my coop door open all day and usually get home from work after dark. My six chickens used to all be inside when I got home. But yesterday the pole propping the door fell and the door blew shut so one of my chickens improvised and flew up into a tree. Wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt...

    vampire chickens

my chickens aren't blood suckers, but they hate sunlight. They stay in their coop until 2pm when the trees block the sunlight. and When I let them free range they run around in the shade but act as if there is an invisible fence where the shade ends. Its only in the lower 70s here so I dont...
