Author Gail Damerow recommends, if possible, rotating the chicken range to prevent too much build-up of parasites and disease in the soil.
My dilemna: My run space, while well more than the *minimum* 10sf per bird, is not spacious. 6 birds, run 15 x 20 (Chicken math will not result in more...
It seems that most everyone has their laying boxes in their coops, though I've seen some pictures/video where the boxes were out of the coop.
Due to exremely hot summers and trying to see if I can keep from running my fan 24 hours a day in the coop, I'm considering having my next boxes out of...
Greetings:
I live in an area that gets very hot during the summer and so I'm going to put a fan in the coop on one of those temp sensors that switch on when it hits 78*.
This will be my first year with chickens. Just wondering whether they will be in the coop at all during the day? I don't...
I kow how much my feed costs, and am considering raising mealworms. But how much does it cost, say to raise, a pound (or some other useful measurement) of mealworms? I'm assuming it costs less than purchasing them, but want to make sure that it's worth the trouble and time.
Thank you,
Jon
I asked what breed my (supposedly RIR) chicks were 4 weeks ago. I got even number of replies for NH and PR. Now that they are a little older I thought that I might get a more definitive answer?
I have been reading about allsorts of pests and diseases here on BYC. When my birds are hit with something I want to notice it promptly so am thinking a book on chicken health would be wise.
I am thinking about the Chicken Health for Dummies book. Is this a good book, or is there another one...
OK. I don't mean to offend anyone, and really appreciate the huge amount of good advice I've gotten on BYC.
That said, my only "complaint", if you will, is the advice given by people that know no more about chickens than I do: coupled with the fact that, until you get a feel for those with...
I'm going to have my 5 gallon bucket outside of the run, and use pvc pipe to bring it into the run and coop.
Not sure how many watering stations I want total, but at least the 2 mentioned above (the questions of how many total I've asked in another thread).
The question here though is: How...
I'm going to have a small, 15' x 20' run. How many watering stations should I have?
I was going to have just one, thinking that they can easily walk to it when needed. But do chickens benefit by having more watering stations to encourage them to drink.
Thank you,
I'm planning on switching from my 250w red light to a 100w heat lamp that doesn't put off any light; and just wanted to ask if there is any good reason not to do this, assuming that I can keep the temp where it needs to be?
I have to have the red light so far away from the chicks that I'm...
Greetings:
I just got some watering nipples and would like to get my chicks switched over to these.
So I put a 20 oz bottle w/ a nipple in it with the birds but no water is coming out. Could the water pressure be too low? I have eloctrolytes in the water...could that be plugging it up? Or...
I just got some chicks at TSC. I asked for RIR. But with all that I am hearing about how rare it is to get RIR I'm wondering whether they are RSL.
I searched for images of RIR and RSL pullets and was able to find only RIR. Mine look the same as the RIR I found, EXCEPT mine have black and white...
The last time I had chickens was 40 years ago. With egg prices going up here in California, decided to get back into it.
The past couple of weeks have been a roller-coaster: Austrolorps or RIR? or While Leghorns? or Barred Plymouth Rocks? Oh the decisions!
Finally decided on RIR. Our local...
I know that you shouldn't leave baby chicks for few days, but that it's OK when they are older...as long as you give them plenty of food and water to last them, and have someone come by and check on them daily. But what is the "magical age" that this can be done? In other words, when are they...
Getting my first chicks within the next week or so (5 Australorps). Went to the Feed Store to get some food in preparation. I took 10 lbs to the counter and asked how long that would last 5 chicks. The lady told me about 4 days! That shocked me, as they are such small cirtters. Just wondering...
Greetings:
I've not had to ask quesitons much becuase most seem to have been answered already. And while I found many threads on roosts, haven't found anlything dealing with my question.
I want to put my roost as high as I can, but don't know how much space there needs to be above the roost...
Greetings:
I haven't owned chickens since I was a kid, and am thinking about getting a few. But am wondering if you can give leave them for a few days by giving them extra food and water?
Thank you,
