Are you supposed to tip the person who loads your feed?

Everytime I go to our feed store and they load the feed, I feel like I should give them a tip, but never do. Is a tip the proper thing to do? I never know when to tip for things.

Can I move a broody and her eggs from dangerous to safe place?

My dad calls and tells me about a hen that's been sitting on eggs for at least a week. It's behind the garage, uncovered, unprotected. He said today the poor thing got soaked and there's more rain to come. I can't believe nothing has gotten her yet. He needs to move her ASAP. If he takes...

    exchequer leghorn or ancona?

Penny was sold as an Exchequer Leghorn, but the seller told me he showed her as an Ancona... What is she, really? In searching, I've found they are very similar. She does have some feathers that are solid white, to go along with a lot of mottling. Is that the difference? Exchequers have...

How do you become a 4-H volunteer - what do they do?

Hey, so I don't have children , but I do have chickens. I hear about 4-H all the time, and I wonder what is involved in volunteering, or maybe mentoring youngsters in showing chickens, etc. I know this is normally done by the parents, but are there also general volunteers? I nfo would be...

    Ancona vs. Exchequer Leghorn

What is the difference? I am really confused, because I went to see someone with exchequer leghorns, hoping to get a few birds. He said that he entered one of his pullets in an APA show, but he entered her as an Ancona - and she ended up winning reserve mediterranean! Well, I know that...

Club feet - why did it happen? Lots of pics

Wondering why some of these have club foot. Here's what happened. For the set of chicks below, the eggs were incubated together. This batch is different in that a friend hatched in her incubator (so her daughter could see chicks hatch). I picked them up at 1 week. At the time, I didn't...

Why do you want to keep showing if you never win?

People unfamiliar with exhibition poultry can be pretty cruel, I’ve found. They laugh and snicker when I speak of my show chickens and how I bathe them and spend countless hours prepping for shows. Then the clincher came when DH said to me: “if you never win anything better than Best or...

    How do you burn leaves?

I've never burned anything, but I see a lot of folks burning leaves these days. We're allowed to burn here in the evenings, but I don't know how to do it. How big of a pile, how do you control it, get it started etc. Thanks!

Came across capons at the store today!

We had a new small chain grocery store open here. It's one of those stores that has a lot of off brands and that type of thing. I was checking out the turkeys when I saw they had Capons! We've been trying to find one forever. So that's what we'll have for Thanksgiving this year. It...

Bluing - anyone have before and after photos?

I'm curious as to the difference this product makes when using it on the white birds. If you have photos, that would be wonderful! If anyone has any bluing disaster photos i.e. bird ended up too blue that would be neat as well. Thanks!

    cooping in question

If a show accepts birds the evening before or the morning of the show, what do you prefer/choose? Let’s assume that you live close enough that either option is feasible. Are there any pros and cons to either?

    rooster and guinea relationship

I'm still not sure if our 2 guineas are female. The only indication that I have is that they always follow this one rooster around and he sleeps on top of the coop with them. Occasionally I see him having intimate realtions with them. Is this a sure indicator that they are female...
