How do you get Lavender plumage, and is this a Lav chick?!

Does this chickie appears to be Lavender color? I have two like this. What do you think? Also, can anyone tell me how one would go about breeding Lavender plumage (on purpose, lol)? My Lav looking chicks are from a Splash Ameraucana roo and hen possibilities are: Barred Rock x BW Ameraucana...

What hens to breed with my BCM x Welsummer roo?

My idea is that I would like to preserve the dark egg color as much as possible, while increasing production in the offspring. What type of hen is an excellent layer, but tends toward a darker brown egg color? I have a RSL that's lays an almost terracotta colored egg, but then I've seen other...

Morning pips have not progressed. Should I be worried?

I had two pips this morning (around 9am), and now (about 11 hrs later) I can tell they are still alive, but the have not progressed at all. Should I be worried, and if so, at what point should I intervene? I was thinking if they have not hatched by morning, I will help them along. I just don't...

Roo driving hens out of the flock.

A couple weeks ago, I saw my roo and lead hen chasing anther hen all over the yard, and just attacking her mercilessly. The roo was not mating her, just pecking and kicking her. The poor girl lost all the feathers from the top of her head and back of neck, and got bloodied comb and other...

Trouble with Turn X - Automatic turner not strong enough?

I set up my Turn-X incubator with auto turn and ran it without eggs for a day. It was turning just fine. But now that the eggs are in, it appears the motor is not strong enough? It tries to turn, but can't move the dome. Is there anything I can do (besides manual turning)?! Thanks, Shannon

Thick lumpy shells...Can I still hatch them?

One of my hens lays over calcified shells on a regular basis. Would chicks have too much trouble breaking out of such an egg? Anyone have success incubating thick lumpy shelled eggs?! Is there something I should be doing to correct the problem? She eats layer feed and has access to oyster shell...

What breed is this hatchery "rare breed" rooster?

Please see the CL ad: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/grd/2189050077.html Not my bird, but I'm curious to see if he's "something". Kinda looks like a clean faced EE, but would that be included as a rare breed chick by the hatchery?

Are certain breeds less susceptible to hawk attack?

I lost my first chicken to a hawk a couple days ago, which got me thinking, it will be back, and also wondering if I shouldn't restock my flock with more predator resistant birds. At first I thought heavier breeds would help, but the hawk didn't take this hen away. It killed her on the ground...

Does fluorescent light work to extend laying?

I use a light on a timer that comes on for a couple hours in the morning. In the past, this has worked to keep the girls laying. Last time the bulb burned out, I replaced it with a compact fluorescent bulb, and laying seems to have dropped off sharply since then. Do you think it's just a...

Would a RIR roo over Cuckoo Marans hen produce sex linked chicks?

I'm looking at buying some chicks on CL. The are a mix of Cuckoo Marans hen x Rhode Island Red rooster. Would this produce a sex link? They are selling 6 chicks straight run, but I want to make sure I don't get all boys. Thanks!

If you saw this pullet, would you think Blue Wheaten Ameraucana?

This thread is just for fun, and for my curiosity. Does this look like a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana pullet to you? (I happen to know she is only half, but I think she's GORGEOUS.) Would love to get some replies from the Ameraucana experts, and I'll let you know what else is in the mix.

    Chicken with single wattle?!

I adopted (rescued) three chickens yesterday. Their pen was so small, they'd pecked each other half naked. So they look terrible of course. One of them has a single wattle, more like you'd see on a young turkey hen. I've never seen this on a chicken. Any thoughts? Everything else looks like...

Rooster poop problem - Pooping very frequently and messy behind.

Hi, I hope someone can help me figure out what's wrong with my cockerel. He's a little over 4 mos old. The past couple of days he's been pooping a lot more often, and it doesn't seem like a whole lot is coming out each time. It's like he's straining to go frequently, and only a little comes out...

Bald Hens - What's up with my rooster?

Quite a few of my hens are going bald from too much "attention". I don't get it. I have nine hens for one rooster, which seems like it should be plenty?! Is it just a personality issue? I feel bad for the hens getting their head feathers plucked out, plus it doesn't look attractive...Any advice...

Excess Cockerels - When to Kill?

Hi all, I hatched a small batch of 7 chicks in the beginning of April. It's obvious now that I have five males and two females. I will probably keep one of the boys, because he's gorgeous and sweet, but I'm toying with the idea of putting the rest into our freezer. They all have an Ameraucana...

HELP! Chick ate mushroom, now lethargic.

I let my chicks roam around for a little this afternoon. I saw one chowing down on something, and went to see what it was. It was a round white mushroom of some kind. I buried the mushrooms so they couldn't find them anymore, but I could tell he'd eaten quite a bit. Maybe 15 minutes after, he...

50 degrees outside. Is it ok for 5 wk olds to go out and play?

My chicks look almost completely feathered. Does it have to be warm for them to go outside and play, or would they be ok at 50 degrees and protection from wind? Thanks!

    Piece of beak broken off?

Hi, someone gave me this hen, and I noticed something wrong with her beak. Looks like a piece has been broken off. Over time, it almost seems as if it's worn down more, though I'm not certain of that. The hen seems in good condition otherwise, and doesn't seem to have trouble eating and...

    5wk old EEs...Lookin' rooish.

My chicks will be 5 wk old tomorrow. Out of 7 chicks I have one obvious roo and one obvious pullet. Please help with the rest! I'd hate to think I have only one pullet. Pretty sure #1 is a rooster. Comb and wattles at 5 wks, and is also gigantic. #2 has comb development and pinkening, but...
