    Do molting hens still squat?

Curiousity question! I'm a pretty new flock owner. One of my SLW was a faithful layer. Around October she stopped and soon after started losing neck feathers and so I assume she has been going through a small molt. She's been looking more feathered lately and today ran up to me and squatted (a...

Egg production slowed, how's this for supplemental lighting

One of my birds (SLW) has stopped laying, and her sister never started. I figure the weather change and less daylight has something to do with it. We are selling our house so I don't want to get really in depth. Does this string lighting (I tried to go heavy by their window) look like it could...

    My mini-coop "Green Gables"

Just wanted to share it! My husband did NOT want to build our original coop. Then we got two new babies to add to our flock and I decided I wanted a mini-coop (or glorified grow-out pen or separation pen) until they could go in with the big girls. I also decided I didn't want to spend much on...

Two girls squatting! READY FOR EGGS!

I've been kind of checking, so they could have done it sooner, but probably not much. Two of them squatting for me since about three days ago, and now I can't help but check the box three or four times a day I know it varies but what is your experience from when squatting starts til first egg?

    Brooder lamp or no?

Just got two week old chicks. They will be garage kept til old enough to join my flock. We live in Louisiana and in the garage it stays about 88-90 degrees through the day. Will they need a brooder lamp or will that be good for them? Do I need to bring it out at night? It was a whole lot cooler...

Do you shut your chicken door at night?

I've been wondering this. I go out every night and shut their chicken door but the door is accessed in the run, which has so far seemed secure. I left it open last night by accident and the chickens were happily pecking in their run when I got up this morning. What do you Guys do? .

    Flies in the run

I saw another thread about flies in the coop but figured I would make my own since situations are different.. Haven't had any fly issues. But we just had a huge rain that turned my run to mud for days. I got in there a couple days ago and mucked it out and then set a box fan for the past...

    Mold in the run

New flock owner. I move my feeder and waterer from the coop to the run everyday. I just set them on the ground. Well, where I set the feeder, mold started growing. I moved it to a new spot, and will place pavers today to set them on. But what do I do about the mold?! I relocated the feeders...

    Chicks aren't roosting

Eight week old chicks got moved to the coop about three weeks ago. They haven't roosted for sleep. They sleep huddled on the floor of the coop. I tried placing them on their roost but they just jump off. Do I need to relax, will they find their way up there? Pic of interior of coop in case you...

Shutting the coop in the rain

I just moved my flock from brooder to coop. First threat of rain since then is today. This morning j went out and shut one iwndow and left the other cracked, hoping to prevent water from getting in. Not sure if I should not do that? Do you guys shut the coop up for rain or just leave it open to...

How would you hardware cloth this window?

Window was put in with traditional window screen. How can I replace this with hardware cloth?

    Best location for feeder/waterer?

Almost finished with the whole set up and now down to the small details. Trying to decide where to put feeder waterer. My run isn't covered, don't plan on covering it (well we will with shade cloth but that won't provide protection from the rain). I live in Louisiana, super hot climate in the...

    Coop bedding?

Approaching the finish line of my coop and run build. Thank goodness because these girls are outgrowing their brooder QUICK. I installed a poop board that I'll be putting sweet pdz in and cleaning kitty litter style every day or two. But as for the floor of the coop-- should I use sans or pine...

Can I feed sprouts to my chicks?

My husband brought this home from work yesterday. My chicks are about three weeks old. Can I offer them these sprouts? And if I do, do I need to offer grit? They are on a starter grower, no grit yet still in the brooder.

Nearly finished--- Does my run need wire on top?

Almost finished with the whole set-up. We are almost done with the run, and have a question. We are planning on using shade cloth over the top of the run. Do I need to continue the welded wire on top and THEN shade cloth? Or can I use shade cloth only? Thanks for any input!

Poop board or no poop board?

Enclosed is pic of coop! It's 4x4 with nest boxes so really 3x4. The roost bar is where the builder put it, and I'm trying to decide how to reconfigure. I really want poop boards with pdz, at about the height of the 2x2 that runs along that left wall, about 12" wide and the span of that 4" wall...

Is this coop a smart purchase?

I recently posted about my coop design but my spouse isn't cooperating in the build so my next option is to purchase. Luckily I live near a man who makes them. He's got one for sale right now which seems about the right size for the flock size I'm looking at. It's got four nesting boxes and a...

    Hatcheries vs breeders Louisiana

So I'm planning on starting a backyard flock. I have three different birds in wanting, ameraucana, Wyandotte, and Orpington. Hoping two of each. I'm willing to try different breeds but only want females and I'm having trouble finding places besides hatcheries that sell sexed birds. Is my best to...

    Coop designed by me-- thoughts?

After a ton of research I have come up with my own coop design. The particulars can be figured out by my spouse, but before I handover to him I would LOVE opinions on what I've got, and what should be changed. I live in Louisiana where winter temperatures rarely go below 30 degrees, but...
