Hope you all enjoy this! This link takes you to my YouTube video. It's about 45 seconds long. I'm so excited to finally have a broody after 4 years with chickens.
This chick hatched Friday and has had distressed breathing since then. The hatch was normal, no assistance needed, all other chicks are fine. I've put Duramycin-10 in the water and am "helping" it drink. I'm including a couple of videos...

First time putting videos in post, so hope this...
I've candled many eggs and this is a first for me. Just wondering what I am seeing and then what should I do?
I can see the embryo clearly and it's little heart is just fluttering away, which is great, right? Here's the bad part: it's always in the same place. It's not "floating" around like all...
What are these dark growths showing up on my hen? You can obviously see the one on her comb, but she also has one right by her eye and then on her earlobe. I've never seen this before. What is it and should I be worried?
Thanks for your help.
I just lost my 2nd hen to something, I'm not sure what. Here are the symptoms,
1. very pale comb, wattles
2. lethargic
3. no interest in food/water
4. can't walk or stand up
5. death
In that order. This last one went down really quickly. The heat here is probably not helping either. But I've...
Symptoms are bad rattle with every breath, pale comb/wattles, no strength to stand.
I'm giving Duramycin 10 because that's all I have. Is there a better tx for this?
Also, how do I get her to eat?
Thanks for your help.
A few of my BSL hens have been looking pretty rough as you can see. Could this be from some kind of pest? As you can see the skin is very red. Out of 10 there are 3-4 that look like this. I don't see them picking at each other, but I guess that could be happening. Anyone have any ideas? Should I...
This is show bird feed (higher protein) that I was going to mix in with the regular layer pellets for some added protein during the winter. I realized (after I opened the bag) that it's medicated. Is it safe to eat the eggs?
Thanks...
These eggs are on day 14 and there are little chicks dancing around in there. These were shipped eggs that took 6 days for the USPS to get to me. Out of 10, only 3 have made it this far. My concern is that 2 of these have huge air cells...I'm talking 1/2 of the egg! Will the chicks be deformed...
I am so fed up right now. I just came from our local post office because I hadn't received 2 boxes of hatching eggs that were supposed to be here yesterday and this morning. One of the boxes sat in the Atlanta postal center for 36 hours. What a joke! I wish there were some other way to do this...
I live in NE Texas and would like some Dominique eggs to stick in the incubator along with some SS I'm receiving from GA. Anybody out there have some? Thanks, Martha
I have a 9-week-old pullet whose crop is unusually large and soft. She is also acting pretty lethargic. I've never had a chicken with crop problems before. Could it be "sour crop?" And what should I do? She's on grower mash, treats of dried mealworms, grass clippings (could that be the problem?)...
which are Speckled Sussex? These are week old chicks and look nearly identical. Does anyone have any experience with these 2 breeds and can advise how to tell apart as chicks? Thanks....
This was the last of my hatch and I had to "intervene" and help it out. It is now in the hatcher alone and recovering. As it is drying I've noticed the top part of the shell is stuck to the chick's back. It still hasn't gotten its feet under itself yet. Should I pull the chick out and try to...
The first one hatched yesterday at noon. There are 11 others in there with 1 egg that pipped early this morning but has not begun to zip. I know I shouldn't open the incubator, but how long is it safe to leave the hatched ones in there?
HELP!
Here are a couple of pics of one of my BSL chicks that hatched last week. This is my first hatch so I have a couple of questions:
1. I've noticed that the females have black beaks and males have yellow beaks. Have you also found this to be a distinguishing trait between the sexes besides the...
I've got 14 little fuzzballs in my incubator and just wanted to share a short video of one of them hatching with "support" from a friend! Enjoy!!! And thanks to all of you that I've learned from on this website. I could have done it without all of your knowledge and experience and your...
I received my Spot Check yesterday and at first it worked great. Now all it shows is the letter "L" (low temp) and the letter "M" in the lower right corner. And now it won't budge from the L even when I have it sticking in my incubator where I know the temp is around 99.5. Has anyone else had...
I'm just on Day 2 but am planning ahead for my first candling experience. I've got 26 of my own flock eggs in an LG with fan and egg turner. I'm assuming that I should remove the whole turner with eggs and shut the bator back up ASAP. Then candle all eggs, removing obviously clear ones, and then...
I am collecting eggs to set in my incubator and wondered if they should be covered at all? Right now I only have one and it's in an opened egg carton on a counter in my guest bathroom. And how important is the humidity and temp in the room I'm storing them in?
