    Acceptable anticeptics for young chickens

A friend's dog managed to mouth one of my 9 week old pullets. It tore the skin on her thigh. There isn't enough there to stitch, so I intend to keep it clean and keep her isolated until it heals over. The bleeding was fairly minor, but the risk of infection is high. I washed the wound with...

Source for a solids compatablie pump for duck pond...

Anyone have any links to or reviews of or have a good pump for use in a duck pond? I am ok with a physical pre-filter to stop items like large feathers, but I need a low wattage, decent head pump that will not plug readily. Any recommendations? Thanks!

    first eggs arriving!

My ducks have finally started to drop eggs (laying would be too considerate a word for them)! the ducks just hit the 4 month old mark – and we have started getting well formed, nicely shaped eggs! They are a little smaller than I expected, but that could be due to them either being early eggs...

    #$@%^#$! (insert swear word)

My ducks (5 runner, 2 swedish, 1 cayuga) are 1 week shy of being 5 months of age. No eggs yet, although I take a sec to peek into their hut in the mornings to be sure. This morning, while I was taking my sweet time, they all hopped out and started splashing in the pond like they always do -...

    An odd warning...

So, the warning is: Don't allow your heavier breed ducklings to compete in foot races with runners! Yes, you read that right. Our ducks like to wander the yard (4 weeks old) beside us. If we move too far away, they'll perk up and come running to be closer. Well, our lone Cayuga has...

How old were your runners when they started quacking?

How about Cayuga? How old were they? Out of my 8 (2 swedish, 1 cayuga, 5 runners) - one of them (a black, so a runner or a cayuga) seems to be shifting in tone, can almost hear a quacking noise starting, although its very faint. They are only 2 weeks old today.

dosing antibiotics to ducklings - ?

Some questions: 1- Are antibiotics (specifically, Penicillin G or sulfa drugs) available at feed stores without a prescription (fairly certain Pen is at least)? 2- Anyone know the proper amount to include in feed or water? Best I can find is for treating turkeys, they state 2.2mg/kg of food...

    Help diagnose this duckling... seizures

This is a Fawn and White Runner from Metzer... 10 days of age. History: Received 11 ducks in the mail, one extra was a F&W. One of them died overnight (Cayuga I believe). Since then, everyone has been growing like a weed. At day 8 (of age)... 2 days ago. We noticed that one of the F&W was...

    Video clip of new ducks

I threw together a short video clip of our ducks over their first few days... from arrival in the box to their first pseudo-swim... Enjoy: Its mostly Runners with a Cayuga and 2 Black Swedish. We like to call their swimming behavior... Frog Rocketing. They look like superspeed frogs underwater.

Duck run substrate? How do you keep the mess down?

I have seen various people talking about how they keep a duck run clean (or at least less muddy).... what is the best surface to have? This is going into a place where it was all grass and is therefore mud by extension. Is sand best? Small grain gravel (like the sifted stuff from a rock...

Blog BYC pages of duck run/pen construction

We have finally had good weather, the snow is going away and I have started work on the duck pen/run. I am documenting the progress on a blog page here on BYC. In two days, I've started the pond (hole in the ground), built most of the pen/shelter, and put in some fencing for the run. For lots...

The cheap duckling holding pen - description and pictures

I built a really cheap, quick and inexpensive pen to hold my soon to arrive ducklings until they are large enough to push outside. It requires: (5) 10' 1/2" PVC pipe (3) 8' 2x4 stud boards large handful (maybe 120 or so) cheapy cable ties 25' chicken wire (3) 8' 1x4 boards few decking screws...

    Vitamin source?

Does anyone use vitamins for their ducklings? If so, where do you get them from and what brands/products? Metzer has a small bag for sale that makes over 100 gallons, so that would last a while, but I was curious if others have a good source. Thanks,

Where do you find your coop floor materials?

Wood shavings, hay, bark, etc... What do you use and where do you get it? I am trying to find a source for my duck housing of wood shavings, but will consider any material that works. I know there has to be a local source, but not sure where. So, where do you find yours? Thanks, Wade

    backyard ponds - mixed use

I am considering building a pond in my backyard in addition to the large garden and duck pen. I am curious to know if anyone has tried doing a pond with a pond liner? Any suggestions? I figure that duck toe nails might be brutal against a pond liner, so I am not sure if the idea will even...

    duck housing pics or designs?

I am curious to see what everyone has as far as duck coop/housing. I have been through the forums and seen most of the chicken coops, but I was curious about what people do for their ducks and couldn't find many examples. I am aiming to build something from scratch, so I have the option to...

    Duckling source of sexed birds?

Is there a quality hatchery with decent selection that will sex the birds prior to shipping for day olds? I know my wife is going to get heavily attached to any more I get and since I am looking for eggs and bug/weed control, I would rather not have to process and freezer any drakes. I will if...

    Solar (water) heating in coop?

Has anyone ever tried to use solar water heating (homemade/DIY/store bought) for adding some heat to a chicken coop? I was thinking about how to build my coop this winter for the spring for laying hens. It isn't "too" cold here, but there are weeks/days that are cold enough to be...
