Heavily prefer a focus on dual purpose birds. Not picky on original source of fibro, we already have Svart Hona and Silkie in our pen. Interested in one or two dozen, would also be happy to trade a dozen (it should be noted that I am not NPIP certified).
Is there a specific brand lots of people use to sort cull/keep birds or am I overthinking this and do I just need to buy a darn scale already? Just want something that will last a good long time.
Do they all end up tracing back to Holderread? I saw somewhere in the Ancona Duck facebook group a mention of Ancona's being around on the United States east coast in the 1930's even though it's said they were only brought over from Britain in the 1960's. So that's one puzzle.
Beyond that, I...
I go out as often as possible to collect them of course, but I have a confused on and off broody and am never sure how long she has actually been sitting on them. Just generally wondering if there's a time frame for development that can't be stopped and then restarted at a later date as I know...
They'll be going back into pens soon as I have grass to plant, but I'm curious if anyone has used any feeder that slows down how much/how easily they can eat in order to encourage foraging. I've been dumping feed, they inhale it, and then they go back to foraging eventually. Due to my own health...
Not sure what I'm dealing with here. Will of course be soaking and cleaning them off, but the bumps of callus are visible. His legs (hocks mostly?) don't match, the following pictures are the best I could get for now. Lame on left (darker) foot. Doesn't appear to be bumble I don't think, will...
I have a 6 week old Australorp cockerel that had his leg snapped in half by something just around 4 weeks ago. I did splint and bandage it, but this happened immediately after I had wrist surgery so he stayed in that splint for 2 1/2 weeks despite growing and that allowed just enough lateral...
It started with two of our ducks disappearing, my fault, they weren't put away at night that one time. Then one was taken out of the 7ft kennel at night. Keep in mind this is all within 20 feet of our house (although at night) with our LGD right there.
So then they were secured in an 7ft tall...
More turkey questions!
I realize it would be much easier to just get broad breasted turkeys, but I can't bring myself to keep animals that can't live to a similar age as other breeds of the same species and that can't even breed on their own. I only care about the flying as it would be nice to...
I would be using the SLW to breed lacing into Naked Necks and really want to start with stock that doesn't drag me backwards in terms of egg production (200+ a year) and body size (6-8lbs). I know SLW's are a dime a dozen and very easy to just order from a hatchery, but as I said, I don't want...
I haven't gotten any poults yet as I want to be sure my set up would work for them (and I won't end up tearing my hair out). I have several acres of overseeding as well as seeding bare ground (silvopasture) to do and I'm wondering how much the turkeys would go after the seeds? I don't have a...
They've just hit 4 weeks, we got them at 2 days, and regardless of what we do, the instincts of 'large thing looming over me' seem to kick in and they legitimately seem like they think they're going to die. (Wish I could tell them I'm a vegetarian and don't plan on culling any of our originals...
I see lots of threads and mentions of this happening, but can any people with hatching experience lend some thoughts as to how to prevent this from happening in terms of egg turning and egg position while being incubated?
I know it can happen for a variety of reasons (humidity, etc), however...
Not that they aren't lovely as they are.
I'm just wondering if there is anyone with breeding programs focused on out crossing to increase egg production while still preserving the specific Orpington traits? Or one that only breeds hens that don't have to be AI due to so much fluff?
I'm not...
So, is it possible for eumelanin to be a ground color and for there to be black lacing on top of that?
I'm assuming it is possible as this is what Papa's Poultry is doing with their Blue Silver Laced Orps project, but I've also read that ground color is only ever silver/cream/isabel/gold/red...
Which would you chose and why?
I'm not doing anything yet as I'm still very much a newbie (prime example; would it ever be possible to breed the brown egg trait out and keep the lace in terms of the Ameraucana?), but I figured I would ask what you all think?
Goal would be for a blue lace...
I'm hoping to get some suggestions for a 24 (duck) max capacity (maybe less?) incubator that can work well in a house without central air? I try to keep the temp as stable as possible, but when we have outdoor temp swings from 30-70, it's not unusual to have fluctuations of up to 10 degrees...
