So I have this hen, this poor little hen that I rescued from a guy who put 6 of them on Craiglsit for free (I took all 6). She is a purebred mutt from the word go. Has some polish or something because she has a horrible hairdo, so we named her Keilbasa after the sausage (lots of different...
What in the world has gotten in to my roosters? I have 2 "dominant" boys that service 20 or so hens. In the last couple of weeks, they have begun crowing from the coop mind you at 4 a.m. or so. It is dark outside, WAY before sunup. Are they blind, stupid, or just trying to get to freezer camp?
So I went out to the coop this evening and found a new one. A softshelled egg inside another soft shelled egg. The inner one had a yolk, but not the outer. I have about 10 pounds of oyster shell in a pan in the run for them too! Crazy stuff, huh?? They eat well, get lots of BOSS and other...
So I bought 5 chicks (a week or so old) from a local farmer who wanted "rid of all these roosters".....he had about 150 chicks and had carefully sexed them all with his Chinese Sexing Crystal. He said he had been "doing this for years and was right 98% of the time". He only wanted .25 each for...
I am SO done with this heat! I was getting 4 eggs a day, EVERY day with several girls getting ready to start along with my 4 solid every day girls. I got NONE on Thursday and 1 yesterday and today. No feed change, no change at all. I added 600 SF to their run out into my woods on Friday so...
They buy you three new laying hens for your birthday! YAY FOR ME!!!!!
1 new Buff Orp and 2 Golden Comet / Barred Rock mixes.
Pics will be forthcoming when the rain ends here.
This is Chloe. We know she is a hen, as we ate her brothers. They had WAY bigger combs than Chloe, but other than that, they were identical. We got them as chicks in April and they have grown way faster than my other birds, keeping up with my dominiques, but not my Cornish X'x. She may be a...
This is Big Mama and her sister Patch. I got them 2 months ago and they just started laying two weeks ago. Patch has never had the "patch" of feathers on her chest. They lay beautiful big pinkish brown eggs. I have no clue what they are, but I am curious!!! Anyone???
Sooooooo I got up and went to my coop this morning and let my flock out. No different than any other day except one of my 12 week old Buff Brahma pullets was laying there dead. They were all fine last night. Eating and drinking wasn't a problem. No bloody poop anywhere to be found. No...
And here she is! A little guinea keet.
12 hours old, eating and drinking and peeping and being cute. Her sister wasn't as fortunate. She was shrink wrapped, although I can't figure out how two eggs right next to each other can be so different. It was the only one that looked shrink...
OK, so I made a homeade incubator from a foam cooler. It works pretty dang good. 10 days in, I got a great deal on a "real" bator, and transferred the eggs. All is well. Candling just like the pics on here for the days they are supposed to. I was thinking that I would do lock down in the...
Howdy!
I live in the Blue Ridge area of Greer, SC. We have a very large front yard (over an acre mowed) and could easily host a meet / swap / auction / picnic if there were folks that wanted to get together. I am just putting my toe in the water to see how much interest there is. email me at...
OK, I get that some small trace of whatever antibiotic I may have to give my flock in the future could or will get into their eggs. Other than my own lack of desire to injest the medicine myself, is there some other reason humans shouldn't eat those eggs? Do the drugs cause the eggs to somehow...
whoever said chickens LIKE scrambled eggs. OK. HOLY COW!! I was glad to not be light yellow and tasty, let me tell you! They LIKE greens, weeds, seeds, worms, yogurt, and pretty much anything else I have tried. They LLLOOOOVVVVVEEEEDDDDD scrambled eggs. It was a frenzy! Eggs and chickens...
OK, so I am on day 9 with my first incubation ever. I bought some guinea eggs. The guy I got them from locally had 50 guineas and 15 were male, so he said he always had good fertilization rates on the batches he incubated, and he had 3 going that I saw that day. Anyway, I got a 150 lumen LED...
I picked up 6 more chicks yesterday. Heaven help me they are like feather covered crack! Anywho, these are all very colorful, and have feathery feet, but I have 3 brahmas, and they are not brahmas. Also, one has a cute little tuft on her (his) head, like a crew cut kinda. No pics yet, but I...
OK, forgive me, I am REALLY new and I want to try incubating. What the heck is "lock down"? Why do we do it? I read the incubating and hatching first 60 days article, but it never mentions locking anything down. Anyone like to enlighten me please? I really want to learn.
thanks!!
Rob
Why do folks process chickens (it seems from reading) in a window of time between 18 and 22 weeks? Is it bad to let the grow more? Do they become tough? I have 6 Cornish X in my flock of 40, and I am new to chickens and the site. They are getting along nicely thank you, and if they continue...
I was at a livestock auction the other evening, and these birds came up. No one else was bidding so I got 6 of them for .50 cents a piece. I believe they are australorp. They are all jet black all over with some lighter coloring around the head, and the one has red hackles. The other 5 are...
