*UPDATE* Day 19 Hen left the eggs!

I have a broody hen sitting on 5 eggs. She left the nest today to help raise 3 recently hatched peeps. I haven't seen this hen off the nest in the last 18 days, she decided to take off on day 19. The 5 eggs were cold to the touch when I discovered them. One of them has a pip, one of them I can...

It can't be this easy...7 week old Silkies(dial-up beware)

I really don't think this is going to be as easy as I am fooled into thinking this is right now. It can't be. I've heard how difficult it is to sex silkies until they either lay an egg or crow. I've noticed some big differences in the 5 I have though. Tell me what you think. 1. Grey Silkie...

    Really odd egg(clear yolk?)

This fooky looking clear yolk came out of a weird small, skinny brown egg :o. I've never seen a clear yolk before, and what is all that stuff hanging out in the yolk? It is really weird. Anyone ever see anything like this before? Needless to say, we didn't eat it.

    Broodys are hard to resist

I wasn't going to do it. I wasn't. We have 26, I think, 6-7 week old chicks right now with 12 more day olds due to arrive next Friday. So why, why are those 2 broodys out in the house so hard to resist? Why? I let the one hen have 3 eggs today. I told myself...it is only 3 more chicks, what is...

    2 weeks old!(picture heavy)

Our first batch of Ideal chicks are 2 weeks old. They are feathering in nicely and the personality on these guys is amazing. It is funny how different they all are. We love watching them play(piece of paper tag is our favorite). Here are the peeps that would stand for a picture... Meet...

    Question about feather growth

My little chicks are a week old now! Wow they grow fast. My question is about differences I noticed in the 2 Blue Andalusians and the 2 Barnevelders. 1 of each breed has very big long wing feathers and the start of tail feathers, while 1 of each breed has tiny wing feathers and no tail...

Ideal chicks(ducks and geese) came this morning!!(lots of pictures)

Our order from Ideal arrived this morning. We had 4 that were DOA, and one more that never pepped up and died a few hours later. We lost a blue silkie, all 3 crele OEGB and I think a Blue Mille Fleur OEGB. We have 20 chicks, 3 runner ducks and 2 geese alive now that are doing fantastically. They...

I just added geese to my order

I added 2 geese to my order shipping on the 27th. I was reading about using geese to help weed the garden(we plant a huge garden). I really want to try it. Poor DH has to rototill the garden about a million times during the summer to keep up with the weeds. Really, I was just thinking of him.

    Is Temp metro?

I think Temp, our rooster, is metrosexual. Or maybe it was just normal rooster behaviour? Or maybe he is just a really supportive father to be. I have 4 hens laying now..woot! I suspect one of the layers is a newbie that we hatched here last summer. I want to catch her in the act. Her name is...

    Newbie in the coop

Please don't peck me Just wanted to take a moment to let you all know who I am. Figured I better do that since the day is fast approaching when I won't be able to resist a 'bator and those wonderful offers on hatching eggs in the "buy, sell, trade" forum. I am trying to hold out until I get a...
