Blanche the 9 month old silver appleyard has been acting strange the last hour. That's just when i noticed. She had been normal up until at least least two - 3 hours ago latest- hunting bugs, eating peas, etc
She was under the deck acting strange, almost like a breathing issue lots of panting...
So bad things happen in threes, and I'm hoping this is the last bad thing for a while because compared to the two duck deaths in two days it's minor. But still needs attention. Not sure what, if anything special, to do.
So while upgrading the outer defenses of my pens i hear a loud crash as a...
So when it rains, it pours.
After losing Rose the silver appleyard last night to unknown reasons, this morning i found our pekin female dead inside the pen. The male pekin was there, skittish and upset but unhurt.
Daphne was a year and half old pekin we got from tractor supply with Niles the...
Rose was a silver Appleyard female, one of four females (the golden girls) just at 9 months. There is another SA and two buff orpington.
Not sure why she passed
I know it's almost impossible to tell (outside of obvious signs) and she looked normal/ was acting normal
Two nights ago, we did a...
Blanche is a 9 month old silver Appleyard (a big one; the only duck i have larger is my big male Pekin)
While dealing with another ducks possible foot issue, i had neglected checking the feet of the four youngest four maybe 3 or 4 weekd as they've never had problem and i wasnt worried.
Enter...
Lillith is a one year old Cayuga female.
After checkig her feet, it seems both pads are blistering. I'm not sure if this is beginning bumble or just blisters? I guess it could happen simultaneously in both feet in the same location.
Either way, i have begun chlorhexadine soaks and am going to...
I've found a few threads similar but not on the specific issue.
Roz, a 1 year old female Silver Appleyard, has recently become broody.
She hangs out with/ nests with 2 cayuga. One male one female. Never had any issues.
Both females share a nest for egg laying and have for months. Recently, Roz...
Yesterday noticedcl one of my four tenants of the same age, a 6 month old female buff orpington, had a considerable limp.
This is very new.
none of the other 3 ducks of her group l, or other 5 ducks we have, have shown this symptom.
Here is a video of her limping:
And here are pictures...
Today my 6 month old Silver Appleyard 'Rose' started making a strange sound, like a small dog bark or yip.
Can't find anything wrong with her would this be a normal sound to not worry about?
Thanks
Quick recap -
At the moment we have 2 factions of ducks that live in relative harmony for the situation:
-1 male pekin
1 female pekin
They sleep in the large duck pen by the large pond that is shared by everyone (as well as all the wild ducks)
- 1 male cayuga
1 female cayuga
1 female...
Checking my large male Pekin Niles last bought nieces a small scab, didn't look like bumblefoot. Left him in his pen overnight. This morning the scab was hanging off so in went to make a soak. When i finally caught him, he hadv these red spots on both feet, that can be seen on both top and...
Expanding my duck pen
The metal T posts are up and tomorrow cementing in the wooden posts for the gate (wish i could do wooden posts completely but due to roots of the large tree not possible)
Question comes in fencing material: i have a nice big 6 foot tall x 50ft long roll of standard chicken...
So a few months ago my father thought we had a nutria in the pond, based on the tell-tale bubbles from swimming underwater. I had never seen it
This morning I saw our bit it seems to be a Texas River otter
I know they are predators but have never dealt with one. The ducks are all large...
So after my 2 Cayuga had bad bumblefoot last fall (they recovered fully from antibiotics and treatment, no actual surgery or cutting) I have been more vigilant in checking them.
Lilith the female has shown a new case (we've had a ton of rain and the 3 ducks in this cohort have been spending...
So we are expanding the existing duck pen which is currently occupied by
2 pekins (M/F)
to include the other faction of 3 that is currently living in the large chicken coop run:
2 Cayuga (M/F)
1 Silver A (F)
and will also be able to hold the 4 to 5 more females that we will soon get to the...
So my Pekin female, Daphne, has been laying eggs consistently for a couple of weeks now. Only once did I fail to find an egg... until yesterday and today. I didn't turn the coop completely inside out but I searched all her nesting spots. Its possible im missing it but I've found them every...
Hello all
So while making sure we don't get sucked into tornadoes here in Central Texas (they all went north near Dallas) but we for notice something on the bill of Niles, Pekin male about 7 months old. Pictured here:
It seems like scabs? They have a rough texture. Is this something that is...
This will be a somewhat lengthy post with 2 major points:
When to get the rest of the females/what age/breed
Where/how to house them since each of my two duck factions has a male and they are in the only 2 enclosures I currently have
Quick recap:
Got a pekin male (Niles) and female (Daphne) and...
Yesterday I posted that one of my ducks, a young male Cayuga, might have bumble foot. As I am not an expert, today took each duck and individually inspected there feet.
For each duck, each was put in the bathtub with about 1/2 inch of warm water and epsom salt. I just sat there and made sure...
Frasier is an almost 4 month Cayuga.
Today I noticed him standing on one foot two separate times. So we caught him and took some pictures.
There was a small cut on the L foot and it's not even visible in the photos which may have been the source. But I noticed the spots and it's the age old...
