    chicks right eye won't open

I bought a two day old silky banty from a feed and farm store last night. When I got it home I noticed that it's right eye was halfway closed. Today it's completely closed and won't open. I washed it gently to see if that would help, but it only seemed to hurt the baby. I'm wondering if I should...

Leaving a light on in the coop...

Is it hard on layers to leave a light on 24/7 in the coop during winter? I was told to do that to get hens to lay more often, but I don't want to stress my hens into laying. Right now I have 22 hens and am only getting 5-6 eggs a day. Is that normal for this time of year?

Is this what moulting looks like?

I have 3 SLW hens who are 16 months old and all three seem to be losing the feathers where their tail feathers meet their backs. One hen has a completely bare patch about the size of a silver dollar. Is this normal? I don't see any bugs on the girls and my 5 other hens don't seem to be affected...

Where did THIS tiny egg come from???

Ok, I have 8 heavy breed year old girls that are laying 4-7 eggs a day. Today I went to gather their eggs and I found this tiny one among the eggs in the nesting boxes. Any idea how this one came to be???

    Woodpeckers hammering on the coops!

Hey, does anyone know how to keep woodpeckers away? They pecked my year old coop in 5 places and now they're drilling my brand new coop! Would a fake owl help? I'm afraid if I put that up it might freak out my chickens.

New banty rooster with regular size hens?

I have eight one year old laying heavy breed hens who haven't had a rooster with them. Would they accept a banty rooster when he's 4-5 months old? Or would they beat him up?

    What are we?

I have no idea what kind of bantys these are. Hopefully someone can I.D. them? There's the gray one and the other one that is gray and brown with funny cheek feathers that stick out. The gray and brown one also has some red feathers here and there. She/he (?) is very pretty!

    New brooder for babies

I thought I'd share the brooder my DH whipped up two days before my chicks were due to arrive March 7th. It's 3' wide by 6' long by 23 inches high. It's off the floor, since it's on 4 wheels, which makes it so easy to roll around and has handles on each end. The two doors on top open and close...

    Brand new coop going up!

Coop #2 is going up! DH says this is the last one! Of course he knows me better than that...I'll just wait another year or two. LOL!!! This beauty will be 8 X 12 with a fenced yard that will connect to the present chicken yard. I was lucky in finding the windows at Habitat For Humanity for $40 a...

    chickenlips' coop

I just had to share the first coop my DH built last year for my 8 girls. I am so proud of him! It's 4' X 8' and he built it without any plans! Eggs are gathered from the side double doors, food and water containers hang from the ceiling, the floor is hardware cloth so poo drops through to the...

    Week old Frizzle sweetie!!!

I just had to share my week old Frizzle baby! She's such a character and races around the brooder which also is home to 15 four week old Cuckoo Marans, Americanas, Golden Lace Wyandottes, 2 three week old mystery banties and 2 week old Mille Fleur banties. When she's tired she buries herself in...

    Wonderful rescue chicken, Gracie.

I wanted to share Gracies' story with you. She was raised alone in a dog crate to become a meal for a snake when she got big enough. The only person who fed her was the roommate of her owner and he came into the store where I work and would buy an ear of corn for her every night. He shared her...

    What kind of banty?

I don't know how to post a pic, but maybe someone can tell me what kind of banty I came home from the feed store with today. It's all light gray and looks like a tiny dust bunny with legs. Very very fluffy, too. Any guesses would be appreciated, as I haven't had a banty before, only full size...

    Ideal Poultry

If anyone's looking for a hatchery to order chicks from Ideal Poultry, out of Texas, is a great one to deal with. They don't require you to order a minimum of 25 chicks: your order just has to come to a minimum total of $25. I ordered 16 and they included 8 warming chicks at no charge, which I...

Good news update on distressed chick

Just wanted to let everyone know that my little cuckoo maran is going great! She's chirping, eating, drinking and running around with all her little chickmates. Her vent looks fine, altho she's lost her bottom fuzz, so I think she's a little embarassed! She's smaller than the other chicks, but I...

Distressed chick with red and swollen vent.

I have a 6 day old chick whose vent is very swollen and red and she seems to be in distress. She won't eat or drink and just stands with her head and wings down. As soon as I noticed I soaked her bottom in warm water, then ran her over to my neighbor who has raised chicken and quail. He didn't...

Warming chicks sent in mail order.

What do most folks do with the warming chicks sent as extras in their mail orders? I was told that they use males and I sure don't need 8 little roosters down the road. I've tried giving them away and even offered them free to a local feed store, but no one wants them.
