Hi! One of my bantam hens hatched a Silkie X d'Uccle cross this year and unfortunately, it turned out to be a rooster. I already have two roosters in my flock and three is just one too many. He has a good disposition and has not shown any aggression towards people (just really likes the hens)...
Today I noticed that my broody hen and her 4-week old chick were aggressively sparring with each other-- the chick (who I suspect is a cockerel) jumps up and pecks at the hen's head with hackles flared as if trying to dominate her. In turn, the hen pecks at and "dances" to the chick with one...
I noticed yesterday that one of my Barred Plymouth Rock hens (2 years old) was breathing a little heavier when she was resting on the ground. When I felt her abdomen it was swollen and firm, but there also appeared to be fluid inside. I also felt a hard, firm object--whether it's an egg or tumor...
I just noticed today that one of my five Barred Rock hens, who was outside free-ranging, appears wobbly, though not so wobbly that she can't stand. She is still walking around, eating and acting like her normal self. I went outside to examine her and upon picking her up, felt that she was quite...
About yesterday or the day before, I noticed one of my Buff Orpington hens has a small bump on the rim of one of her eyes and a larger, scabby bump between the same eye and her beak. A few days before this, she had a scabby bump on her back, where new feathers are growing in from a recent molt...
About four days ago, I noticed one of my two four-year old Wyandotte hens was standing around and acting rather listless. She is one of my most skittish hens (and a non-layer), so her allowing me to touch and pick her up anytime wasn't right. After about two days of the same behavior, I brought...
An opossum somehow managed to grab one of my silkies and drag her under one of the two coops last night before I went out to close them up. Upon seeing the opossum underneath the coop with the silkie, I assumed the pullet was dead. However, once the opossum was killed and I was attempting to get...
These are my two Silkie pullets, whom I call the "Silkie Sisters" (both are not officially named at the moment). I acquired them from a Tractor Supply store during March; it has been interesting and amusing to watch them grow into the fluffy Silkies they are today.
They are spunky little...
Just this morning, I saw that my Easter Egger rooster (who has a great dislike for this hen ever since she was aggressive to him when he was integrating into the flock), had trapped her in a thicket and was repeatedly pecking her on the head. I ran outside, intervened and brought the hen inside...
This Easter Egger cockerel is from a group of chicks I picked out at a Tractor Supply in March. He is non-bearded, has gorgeous feathering, is tame and well-mannered. The only reason I'm rehoming him is that he is one cockerel too many for my flock.
Will not ship. PM me for more details.
I've noticed within the past week, that one of my four Silkie chicks has become very wobbly and unsteady when it tries to walk. It also tends to hold its wings down slightly and seems to prefer sitting in one spot and pecking around itself rather than foraging like the others.
It has had a...
I noticed that my 3 week old Mille Fleur d'Uccle is beginning to show a larger comb than the Porcelain d'Uccle of the same age; I can even see the smallest hints of red skin on the "chin".
I got two assorted bantam chicks along with some Silkies and Ameraucanas from Tractor Supply last week. They both have feathered legs and the light-colored one is slightly smaller than the darker one.
Chick #1
Chick #2 (next to the larger Silkie)

I noticed this morning that one of my Cherry Egger pullets, Belle, seemed to be "out of sorts". The inside of her beak has sticky saliva and when she tries to drink, she pauses halfway, almost as if it's uncomfortable to lower or extend her neck. She also tends to sit in one place until another...
I noticed earlier today that one of my pullets (all are laying; though I am not sure on this one) was crammed in a corner of the porch and squatting. When I gently pushed her away (normally she would not let me touch her), she wanted to cram herself in the corner again and squat. I picked her up...
I noticed just today that Blackie, my Black Star (currently molting), has been making gurgling-like (?) sounds with her throat when she drinks water (I can actually see her throat move when she does it; it looks as if she were making normal clucking noises). She doesn't do any other time and is...
I was just wondering if anyone could give me some more information on the color type and possibly, breed of Big Moe. On Craigslist he was listed as an Araucana, but I believe he something like an Ameraucana or Easter Egger.
One of my ISA Brown hens (Red) just today had a scuffle with my new rooster today (nothing too serious; mostly to see who is more dominant). Both appeared to be uninjured except for a slight speck of blood on my hen's comb and some on her wattles. One thing that concerned me was that one of that...
After multiple Cooper's Hawk attacks on the hens and pullets, my family finally conceded to my idea of a rooster as a protector and watchful eye for the flock (at long last!). After looking through Craigslist posts, I got this big guy on January 1st, an excellent way to start the new year! He's...
