I have 3 RI Reds and 3 Plymouth Rocks. None have laid. Today I became suspicious one is a rooster. Here are some pictures of the chickens.
What do you think?
I have 3 RI Reds. They all hatched in May 2010. Recently I noticed one of them has a larger comb and waddle than the others. I have never heard it crow. Today however, I was installing a new ladder type perch in their run when it started making loud noises. Not necessarily a crow, but...
We had a dozen chickens that were split up after a few weeks together. They are now all 6 months old and live in two different locations.
One group has been laying for a few weeks now but the other group hasn't laid a single egg yet.
What is up with that? Shouldn't they lay pretty close to...
Is it necessary to provide 14 hours of light for chickens to lay eggs? Should the natural daylight be supplemented morning and evening to maintain egg production?
I have a small coop...16 sf for 6 chickens and the run is 4' x 12'. It is pretty tight inside so I don't want to put the water and food in there. Are there any isues keping the food and water outside? I will get a heater for the waterer. Will the food freeze up in the container and not fall...
A fwe of my chickens started lying down in the dirt. I don't recall seeing them do that much in the past. What are they doing...ralaxing or getting into the nesting mood?
I don't free range my chickens because there are 4-5 cats in our area. The only cat that seems interested in the chickens is our cat who often climbs the coop trying to gain access. Can chickens defend themselves against a cat?
I haven't been able to free range my chickens because of all the neighborhod cats so they are almost always in the coop. The floor of the coop is 4' x 12'. Originally, the ground was covered by hardware cloth to prevent animals from entering. On one 4' x 4' section, I cut the mesh, then...
I am not sure where this should be posted...so I'll ask here.
Where can I buy cheap egg cartons? I won't be selling eggs but will likely be giving away a bunch.
Is it really necessary to insulate a coop? I have 6 chickens and live in MA where we have some really cold winters. The coop is made of 2x4 framing with plywood sheathing, 30# felt and clapboards. Do I really need to insulate it? I put some hay in there figuring they can nestle down in that...
I live in New England and am getting ready for my first winter with chickens. I do not have an outside water source in the winter and will need to fill a bcket inside then bring it out to the coop. Are the heated water bases worth money? Do they use a lot of electricity? They sell for about...
I built my nesting boxes only 6" off the floor of the coop. Is that too low? I have already finished the exterior and reframing to raise the boxes would be major work. What problems will I have with nesting boxes that low?
Thanks
I am about a month away from our first eggs. I switched to a layer feed for this past month. Should I also supplement with calcium chips or does the food have ample calcium? I am using Nutrena layer feed.
Hi BYC,
I was reviewing some nesting box designs and stumbled upon an agricultural extension website that claimed egg production increased when the opening to the nesting box was reduced to 6" x 9". Most of the pictures I see on the internet show a wide open box. Does anyone have experience...
