Sick hen with a twisted neck

One of my hens was a bit wobbly yesterday and today she is sat in the nest box and her head is twisted round so that her beak is pointed at the sky. Does anybody know what this could be and if its curable? None of my other hens are affected. Any help is much appreciated.

Chicken laid a slug full of membranes

I went out to the coop today and found a cracked egg and this lying beside it. It looked like a big cream slug and when I opened it, it was full of membranes and pink stuff. Has anybody had something like this before or knows what causes it?

    2 broodies in same shed

I have had a broody hen for the last couple of weeks and never got round to breaking her. Howver she is the boss of the flock and as a result she was scaring the other hens off the adjacent nest box and one of my hens went missing. And egg production seemed to plummet. However after moving...

    Vaccines for hens

Hey I was just wondering if anybody here vaccinates their hens against salmonella and if so what product they use and a rough price? I figured if i'm giving my eggs away to other people i should probably vaccinate as i don't want to inflict salmonella on them. I've never had a problem with...

Hey I was just wondering if it is possible to place chicks under a broody that is hatching eggs. The reason i ask is that she is a pekin bantam and she is attempting to hatch 15 eggs that she has hidden from me for the past few weeks. I didn't notice for a few days so unfortunately they have...

    Chicks hitting puberty

Does anyone know roughly when a cockerel hits puberty? As my broody hen was walking about the yard quite happily this morning when to my horror, she got set upon by her 8 week old chick! Suffice to say she has now disowned him and started to lay again.

    Crossing cross breeds.

I bred different OEGB cockerels to pekin hens to give me a cross that has feathered feet and the athletic ability of the OEGB. If i take 2 of these cross breds and mated them what is the likely outcome. I'm guessing it's not simple Mendelian genetics with 4 chicks at a ratio of 1 almost pure...

    Rotten fresh eggs

A friend of mine recently purchased some marans and one of them is laying off eggs. They have disseminated yolks and taste rotten. Is this a characteristic of any particular disease? As i am worried about it spreading to the others. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Another started laying at around 23 weeks old. However the third pullet still isn't laying. Does anyone...

    Placing chicks under a broody

Can day old chicks be placed under a broody that is sitting? If so how would i go about it? As i currently have eggs in the bator and have noticed that one of my pullets has gone broody. Therefore it would save me the hassle of hand rearing chicks if i can give them to her.

    Different development rates

I purchased 6 eggs on line and put them in the bator 5 days ago. I had to chuck three of them today as the yolks had become dispersed throughout the white. However the remaining three are okay. But one of them seems to be more developed than the others. It has thicker veins and a bigger body...
