My 2.5 year old NHR rooster was perfectly normal when my DH got home tonight. DH said that when he got home Danielle came out of his enclosure, he ran out like normal and went over to the fence to see the hens on the other side like he does everyday. Then he went over to a bag of ice and lowered...
Of course my chicken became ill ON the weekend AFTER a snow storm when the vet is closed.
He's a 2 yo bantam cochin. He's normally semi-aggressive, stays with the hens during the day, but prefers to sleep alone in a pet carrier at night. Yesterday my DH told me he wasn't in attack mode as he...
We have 3 bachelors who will be 2 years old in March. We have one bantam roo that stays with 6 hens. The bach's are housed by themselves but they can still see and interact with the girls through the fence. Periodically Lily, one of the hens, will fly over and mingle with one of the roos. They...
What type of arrangements do you make for your flock when you go out of town?
We have 9 pet chickens and finding someone whose not afraid of the roos is becoming ridiculous. A friend took care of them a couple of weeks ago and it turned into a nightmare. Our pet sitter can do them but won't...
Look at the comb of the one in front compared to the others...what do you think of them? Girls or boys? They were all the same age in this pic....15-16 weeks, I think?
And what about these two?
I hope this pic comes through...
This is Lola..she's 18 months old, has not laid that we know of and tries her best to crow. I assume she's female because she mates with our bantam cochin, Louise.
What the heck is she? We got her from TSC and they said she was a gold duckwing OEG, but the pics...
Based on the shape of this egg, I'm assuming it was laid by my bantam cochin, Helen. She's 15 months old and has always laid brown eggs. The one from yesterday was white!
Helen lays the most adorab;e squatty looking eggs that look just like her...small and round. She gets lots of sun, a layer...
I have a BA who turned a year old 3/17 and she hasn't been the best layer. She was egg bound with a very soft shelled egg that was removed by an emergency vet and she's dropped two very soft shelled ones in the yard which were promptly scooped up by the rest of the flock.
She laid an egg...
My little flock of 11 are going to be a year old in March and I want to have a birthday party for them. Any ideas? I've looked for birthday supplies with chickens on them but no luck so far.
I want to try and find some hats that look like combs for ppl to wear and maybe some tiny bday hats for...
My bantam rooster Iris has a high pitched crow, but since yesterday evening, he sounds like he's losing his voice. His crow sounds strained.
I don't think he was injured in anyway. Can a rooster lose his voice? He can be a little nasty man and attacks me fairly often. He's a teeny little thing...
nesting boxes need to be up high on a shelf? Is there something wrong with a hen laying on the ground in the coop?
Just wondering......mine lay on the ground, without a nest box...they just found a dark cozy corner, dug out an area, laid their eggs and leave the coop. Is that a bad thing?
This week I've gotten 5 eggs so far from either Corey or Melanie, my two 4 month old pullets (NHR BO) (3/10 was when I got them).
They haven't laid in the nesting boxes yet, they seem to like digging on the coop floor and laying there.
Well, Corey has been in the coop twice today to nestle on...
Does anyone have a pic of a bantam egg? I'm not sure what to expect when my little tinies lay their first egg..I wonder how it they will compare to a regular sized egg.
Since we had our first egg this morning, I started wondering...
Do you think it might be stressful or confusing to a hen the first time she lays? Do you think it "feels" like a natural process to them?
Or maybe they get this weird feeling and think HOLY MOLY, what IS that in me and how do I...
We got our first egg this am...found it in the corner on the coop floor. It's so adorable!!
So now what do I do? We didn't have any nest boxes set up bc I thought the girls were too young to lay yet...they were born mid-March...so they're 16-17 weeks now?
Should we set the next boxes where...
Did anyone get this issue? The only place I can find the mag is at TSC but they never got that issue in stock. I just got the July/August one in the mail bc I went ahead and got another subscription.
What was on the cover? I'm trying to decide if I actually missed an issue or not...
The last...
