It’s that time again: chick delivery

Ah. The never ending quest to identify mixed shipments of hatchery chicks. Ordered two RIR, four white leghorns, four Ameracauna’s, three Black Star pullets and got the one ‘mystery chick”….. RIR and Leghorns are easy. I thought the Black Star would be easy…but then I ended up with five...

    What the heck. Confused. Frustrated.

I've had the two new hens for two weeks. (Australorp and RIR) About a week ago, I put them in the chicken lot with my original hen.(NHR) For the first several days, the two new hens kept to themselves and away from my NHR, and the NHR continued to lay. Then I noticed the RIR and the NHR had kind...

    A week.

I've had the two new hens for a solid week and neither one have laid an egg. I'm bummed. One egg a day just isn't going to cut it, which is all I'm getting now, and that's from my original hen. I got these two hens with the hopes of getting more eggs eventually. Now, they're not laying. I...

Rescued hens... when might they start laying?

Honestly, I'm not expecting the one with the congestion and coughing to lay. She's not doing any worse, but she's not doing any better. Still active, eating and drinking like normal, but still sounds congested and I'm still hearing her cough. The other hen appears to be healthy, though a bit...

Rescued two new hens, one sounds congested/coughing but active.

This morning I picked up two hens that have been living in small, very dirty, very crowded cages. One is a Rhode Island Red, the other is a black Australorp. I moved them into my lot/coop, and am going to leave my other hen to free range for a couple days. The Australorp sounds congested, and...

This may be a stupid question... eggs/cholesterol.

I don't even know if I'm putting this in the right section.. if not, please tell me and I'll move it. My father recently had a stroke. Years of not following doctor's orders, not taking care of himself, being over indulgent, and no exercise finally caught up with him. Heart disease, diabetes...

Going from free range to confined.....

We've had these hens (we have two) for almost a year and they've been free range since they were about three months old. They roam our property during the day, roost in a cedar tree at the corner of the driveway at night. We've been okay with that arrangment. My neighbor recently had something...

    Rare, unique breeds?

There are SO many different breeds out there. I guess different areas would produce more of one type than another, thought. So, I was just wondering... what is the rarest, prettiest, most unique and/or most expensive chicken you've ever seen? My grandpa had a couple cochin's when I was...

Are we still thinking RIR and Production Red?

I've got three hens that I started out with, as two day old chicks. When I first began posting their pics, asking what breed they may be, some of you said they were production red's and then some said the darker one could be a RIR. Now that they're older, I was wondering what you guys think...

    May be getting a Silkie....

Not very familiar with this breed. Other than some pics I've seen on here. Anyone care to share some info? What are their eggs like? One of the volunteers at the ministry I work with has a friend who raises Silkies. He said he'd get me a pair if I'd like.... I think we decided on one hen...

Only one hen laying in box, can't find the other's eggs.....

I've got a dog house full of hay in an empty stall in my barn. The hen that way laying in the hay stall is laying there now, luckily. But the other hens, I can't find their eggs? They free range, so I know they could be anywhere, but I've looked closely in the places I see them going often...

Ooooo.... see, it's not so bad, now is it?

I have two daughters. A nine year old, Poptart; a two year old, Bitsey. My two year old is going through that "I won't eat unless it's sausage, bologna, chicken or peaches" stage. My nine year old went through that stage and never left....... feeding her is such a major obstacle. She will eat...

There are varying levels of my countryness....

While you'd think farm living is farm living, there are different types of farm living. For example. I grew up on a farm, a horse farm. And while we grew our own fruits and vegetables and canned to get through the winter, we did not raise our own meat, dairy, eggs, etc. We grew horses and...

Egg laying, safe to eat eggs.... more questions from a new egg finder.

I doubt any of you remember me, but my family got six chicks back in April/May. Our intention was to get three, but we had to get six, so we rehomed three of them and are left with three. One RIR, two production reds. The chicks free range, mostly roost in the barn at night. Friday night, I...

    Wasps.

I have a wasp nest in my coop... got me three times in the forehead today. What's the safest way to get rid of them without harming my chicks?

    Wasp Nest in Coop.

Anyone want to guess how I know? Yep.. three times right in the forehead, then as I swatted at them, knocked my glasses off my face and scraped my nose. So now, I have three huge welts on my forehead that have my entire head pulsating with pain and a half inch scrape down my nose. So, what's...

Chicks moved to an outdoor hutch today....

And I'm not sure how I feel about it, to be honest with you. My babies are growing up. My grandpa raised chickens and rabbits when I was growing up. There was one of his old rabbit hutches, still out next to one of his building and my father and I moved it down to my house today. It needed...

Flock got to spend some time outside today.

Since it was such a nice day, I set the crate that keeps the chickies, out on the porch and let them enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. They REALLY enjoyed it!! I wish I were brave enough to let them free range a little, but I'm scared I won't be able to catch them.

    New pics of the chicks!!!

Since I lost my job last week and am now a stay-at-home-mom, I've had more time to handle and take pics of the chicks. Are we still thinking RIR/RIRX/Production Red? And White Leghorn? They're about four weeks old now. I must say, Callie, the darker of the "red" chicks is by far more friendly...

Is it wrong to have a favorite? LOL

Out of the six chicks we got last week, I've chosen one to be my favorite. I know it's not fair... mother's shouldn't pick favorites, but I just can't help it. Isn't she a pretty two week old? Are we still thinking RIR?
