I can't believe they ate the WHOLE thing!

Wow. This morning I put the carcass of an almost gone rotisserie chicken in the chickens' pen. When I got home there was not a shred or bone left. I couldn't believe it! Can they really break up those bones?? I hope they just scratched them into the sand and shavings in the run!

Help! Gasoline smell in future coop

I got a really nice Rubbermaid 4'x8' shed for a steal ($100!) and intended to use it to enlarge my current chicken coop. The previous owners must have stored their mower or something inside because it has a faint gasoline smell when you open it. It has been powerwashed and looks like new except...

    Chickens and Kennel Cough

My dog, Kona, caught kennel cough from my daughter's dog who was visiting on Thanksgiving. The vet put her on an antibiotic and a cough med. My chickens range the yard in the same area as the dog. I am wondering if anyone has ever seen or heard of kennel cough crossing over to chickens. And if...

    Visit to turkey farm

For the last several years, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I have gone to a local turkey farm to get my turkey. By then the processing of their huge flock is usually done. One of my co-workers asked me to go with her today since she is new to the area and didn't know exactly how to get...

Help choosing MP3 player for visually impaired

My husband's uncle is 89 years young and has been losing his sight due to macular degeneration. He is legally blind but can see a little. He is limited in his tv viewing, obviously, but expressed an interest in listening to old time radio shows. I can burn CDs for him but can only fit a few on...

Help! Am I worrying too much?

Good morning. My pullets are 25 weeks old, and I believe that everyone is laying as of Tuesday. Cagney was the first to lay. She started about a month ago and for a couple of weeks gave me an egg every day or two. They were steadily getting larger. On Monday I realized that day was the first in...

    Help! Need Halloween riddles/jokes asap

Normally I am not a procrastinator, but this fell through the cracks. I am going to the Halloween Parade at my grandchildrens' school. They and their friends think I have a riddle for every occasion. They heard my best ones last year, and I fooled around too much on BYC and didn't look up any...

    Flock Block...was it a mistake?

My eight pullets are 24 weeks old and are giving me five eggs a day. They have 24/7 access to layer food and oyster shell. I sprinkle about a cup of BOSS in the coop in the evening. They range the back acre for a few hours a day. Also on chilly mornings, I give them oatmeal cooked in milk. (1 c...

    Noisy chicken... is this normal??

First let me say that until yesterday I was only getting one egg a day. Yesterday there were three. I do not know which ones just started laying yesterday. My concern is that for the last 15 minutes or so, one of my pullets is doing what I thought was the egg song... bwak bwak, bwak, bwak...

    Egg song!

One of my chickens started laying a couple of weeks ago. I'm pretty sure another has started too because I am getting one egg a day now. This morning as I was getting in my car I heard, "Bwaaaaak, bwak, bwak, bawk, bwwwwaaaakkkkkkkkkk" and the first thing I thought was that something had gotten...

    Let there be light

Well, today I decided that I was going to put a light in the chicken coop. My pullets are just starting to lay just as the days are getting shorter. I got a timer but foolishly forgot to make sure the light itself was turned on. When I went up to close the chicken door of the coop, I turned the...

    yay for the third egg!

On 9/22 my beautiful Columbian Rock laid her first egg. When I got home from church yesterday, there was another one! And today when I checked after school there was another! Even though I realize there could be one in the nest box, it's such a joy to find it there! Do you think that the...

    Waterer question

In early May, when I got my chicks I also got one of those TSC waterers with the red base and gallon reservoir on top. I found they were roosting on it an pooping into the water and I would have to clean it out several times a day. So, about 2 weeks ago, hubs made a waterer with nipples out of a...

    Coop insulation, light, and ventilation

Hello from Maryland! So, we are off on the great chicken adventure for the first time. We bought our chicks at a local feed store at the beginning of May. What a great party! Last night the temperature dropped to about 63 degrees where I live. Before I close the door to the coop I always do...

Hi, everybody! I've been reading BYC forums for over a month and have learned so much! I appreciate the valuable advice and information posted. One month ago I got my first chicks: 4 Barred Rock, 2 Columbian Rock, and 2 Rhode Island Red. Who would have guessed that I would have grown so fond of...
