...or run, specifically. (And the answer "tear it down and start over" doesn't work - LOL).
I just moved into a rental house with a short-term lease. I wasn't able to get my coop into the backyard, but this house has a coop already, so my three birds are in it. The problem: it's a wet place...
I have three pullets available, from some shipped eggs I hatched Feb 25. There are two lemon cuckoo Orpingtons and one lavender Orpington. I'd prefer they all go together but will split. $25 each.
I have pics of possible parents if anyone is interested.
This one is way ahead of the others in terms of comb/waddle - I assume it's a boy? I wish it weren't, as it has the nicest coloring, and it's one of the more inquisitive chicks:
Others - could these really all be female?
It's a nice day, and I'm contemplating letting my six 7-week-old birds out for the first time. I'm kind of afraid that they won't return to their little coop and be impossible to catch.
I also have five older pullets (4 of which are laying). Would it be a Bad Idea to let them all out in the...
Cool picture! Whose pic is that? I thought it would be in that chicken math thread, but I didn't see it. What breed of chicken lays the yellowish egg color on the right?
These are all Orpingtons (lavender/lemon cuckoo), hatched Feb 25.
1 - girl ?
2 - boy? (next to #1)
3 - girl?
4 - girl? (lavender)
5 - ??? (lavender)
6 - boy ?
More pics of the whole gang together...don't make me try to label them!
I recently brought home two new chicks to add to ones I'd hatched a week before. The new ones seemed to do fine and were only slightly smaller than the chicks I had. Today, nearly a week later, I found them dead. Does that seem weird? Could they have been sick, or are they more likely to have...
...or do I need to kill it?
As far as I can tell, one or both of its feet are not working at all. One is splayed open and the other is clamped shut. And then there is the issue of its legs not straightening out or supporting its weight.
In other words: if you buy a dozen eggs from a seller, do you expect them to all be fertilized? Or is it common to have up to, say, 1/3 be unfertilized?
I have 20 eggs in the bator now, and it's day 11. There are eight eggs that I can't identify as having been fertile. A few are crystal clear...
I got in touch with the guy who built my coop/run (a design I helped create, which I like very much) in the hopes that he would have something smaller for me to use for younger chicken additions. He currently has a saltbox coop that's nice, and he offered me a good price on it ($225), but I'm...
I'm sitting here with my instructions about taking the end caps off the Ecoglow 20 (to change the height), and I'm not getting anywhere. I'm afraid I'm going to break the plastic apart. I'll probably have to call Brinsea tomorrow, but I just thought I'd see if anyone has any tips.
I've been using fallen leaves in my coop and run. I read about it somewhere and latched on to that idea immediately. Free litter material! However, I don't think they're breaking down very well. The area under the perches gets caked. The leaves in the run stay wet - of course, nothing really...
I tried to get pictures according to the guidelines, but they never stood still (or straight) long enough!! So I aimed for overhead and comb shots. There are 10 birds total - 2 similar B&W EEs and 1 of everything else.
I'm talking with someone about building a coop/run similar to this one: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=33943-rancho-chickacabra
For some odd reason, when he drew up his design, he put the cleanout door on the inside of the run. I can't figure out why he did this when I...
Clueless newbie construction question...
According to the plan for this coop, it is 54" inches on the front side and 43" on the back. But I can't see any angles on the ends of the side frames. Is it possible to just put the sides together and hammer on the roof section, without cutting any angles??

I'm interested in the white & yellow one (in the pics - you can enlarge it), which looks as though it's longer than the 8x8 plan. Any ideas on what kind of wood is used here and what the materials would cost? I wouldn't bury it in...
Assuming you don't free range most of the time and want to let your birds be outside...
And assuming that digging predators (possum) are a possibility...
What do most people do with their runs?
There's someone here selling runs with the entire bottom covered in hardware cloth. I figure if I...
