My 4 1/2 month old domestic mallards are finally swimming in the 3 acre pond. I saw them make huge, high circles around it and land on the water. What a sight!
Now, I just need to find them a house that they will actually use. Right now, they think the carport and back porch are the bedroom...
Anybody raise guineas for meat? Free ranged?
I'm thinking about it.
Haven't ever tasted one but they grow so fast, eat ants, ticks and snakes, plus mice and rats. Need very little feed once outside. Roost high and can fly so less susceptible to being eaten.. They lay a ton of eggs which can be...
I'm currently doing a small batch of Red Broilers from Ideal. I assume they're similar to Red Rangers and Freedom Rangers. I've held back a few red Pullets in the past and they are good layers of large, brown eggs. I'm just wondering if future generations would be any good as meat chicks?
I'm...
I was processing some chickens the other day, a couple plucked and one skinned. Now, I'm far from a germophobe but I'm pretty safety conscious about food processing. I started to think about the fact that skinning a chicken was really exposing the meat to grossly contaminated, filthy feathers...
Was processing a "gimp" Cornish X today with broken leg. Kinda felt bad because the poor pullet had to wait for the holiday weekend to end before I could process her. Anyway, I saw something I hadn't seen before. Her breast was quite dirty, I'm sure from not walking for four days. But, I found...
Just finished processing an overdone Cornish x. A few of these got away from me and I've made my New Year's resolution which is to finish processing this week. I have 7 left after today, I think they're 14 and 12 weeks of age or thereabouts. Then, I have 6 red broilers after that.
Anyway, after...
Any thoughts on managing chickens organically? How to deworm, delouse, feed, treat illness, choose future generations? How do you do this without breaking the bank, causing massive flock illnesses from parasites or illness.
I've pretty much managed organically for most of my poultry keeping...
I'm starting a new discussion since the old discussion was frozen by moderators due to an unfortunate comment. Please, keep this civil. All topics concerning chickens, raising chicks, processing meat birds and even gardineg and composting are fine but please, let's keep this friendly and fun...
So, found one of my Cornish boy's with a hole about the diameter of a 50 cent piece and about as deep as half my thumb in his thigh today. He's obviously not feeling well, although eating, drinking, grazing, he has a bit of a droopy tail and that leg is warm with a pale area of meat around the...
I was looking for a way to use leftover chicken from a monster cornishX and an abundance of eggs. This soup is just the ticket! Has to be the best soup I've ever made! Uses eight egg yolks ( dogs had scrambled egg whites for dinner) , lemon from my tree and plenty of my cooked leftover chicken...
Watched a great movie the other night. I don't usually like documentaries but this really surprised me.. It was the a documentary about Buck Branaham, the Horse Whisperer. It also had Robert Redford. Really great movie, lots of good stuff about people, animal behavior and his life story.
For...
For some reason, I haven't been able to get my home grown Cornish X to come out tender and delicious, not as good as I'm able, anyway. Especially baked. I'm not sure if it's because they've been so darn big or if because the previous batch was grown during the heat of AZ summer but I've had...
Id like to get a few fertile banty eggs for my broody banty. I have two OEGB hens and one roo. The roo has been too busy with his 16 large girls to get his little girls fertile. Before the big girls started to lay last month, all my banty eggs were fertile. Now, none of my eggs are fertile, my...
I have a tiny OEGB roo and two hens. One of the hens is broody right now and I'd like to set a few eggs under her. Unfortunately, ever since my large hens started laying, my banty eggs haven't been fertile. My little roo has been too busy trying to mate the big girls unsuccessfully, due to his...
I was processing some Cornish X yesterday, some of them were mine, some my friends. One of my friend's Pullets had a liver that I would describe as crumbly and rather pale. It sort of fell aprt in the hand after I removed it. Also, I noticed a lot of what I believe we're lymph nodes in a chain...
Just wanted to give my experience so far, I'll update as I go along. I have some 5 week old and 3 week old Cornish X, along with 5 week old red broilers, and a bunch of packing peanuts (3 and 5 weeks). 29 chicks total. Also have three production red Pullets, 5 weeks old. Chicks were raised for...
I noticed an interesting behavior with my young OEGB gentleman and his newly laying pullet today. He was " guarding" outside of her nest box for a long time and then went into the box and lay down with her until she finished laying her egg.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior in their roosters?
My two OEGB Pullets just started laying this week. Tonight I found an egg in their "wading pool". :lauYes, it's still hot enough in AZ for chickens to enjoy wading, 99 degrees today.
I'm considering replacing my EE's with Bantams. I'm just not wild about the look and green eggs are ok but I'd rather have some smaller birds. I may keep a couple but I'm thinking about selling most of them, replacing them with some good laying Bantams. Qualities that I want in my ideal Bantam...
Just wondering if anyone with Sicillian Buttercups, Egyptian Fayoumis, Silver or Brown Leghorns or Hamburgs can tell me when their girls started laying. Mine were all hatched around the first or second week of June, I thing around the 10th. I noticed that they all seem to be getting pink in the...
