"weekend warrior" flock owners (with careers)

I know there are others out there! So you have never raised meat birds before either? Which ones are you considering? How long have you had your chickens? How many and what kind do you have? Have you had to cull yet? So many things even for the small flock owner. Have you introduced new...

    Fertilizers and Herbicides

I had these questions too....about the farm next to us that borders our property. They have dozens of acres of soybean fields and I don't even know who owns it. I think they lease the land. I'm wondering if my chickens eat anything after the spring plant if they'll be sick.

    The actuall process free ranging

Quote: I can't even TALK loud when I'm outside, they come running from anywhere across the yard, ....and when I come home after work the sound of the car pulling into the garage gets them running from the coop (it's dark now) to me. If I talk at all they swarm around me like I've come home...

    The actuall process free ranging

I free range mine from dawn to dusk, when they tuck themselves back in the coop for the night. And we only have 2 1/2 acres. They rarely venture out of the immediate yard. Yours should do great!

    Anyone raise broilers in winter?

Quote: This is very intriguing to me.... What are the volume of birds you are talking about here? And why would a Ministry pay more for organic just to feed people.... I know the obvious of organic, healthy etc, but are you losing money yourself to feed people better quality food than...

Found this tiny egg on the ground of my coop????

I got one like this a couple of days ago. I was hoping it was my youngest pullet, a RIR, that had started to lay. All my other girls are laying but she is younger and at the bottom of the pecking order. She had not begun to lay. Now I think all mine are

"weekend warrior" flock owners (with careers)

I’m wondering how many of us on this forum are “weekend warrior” flock owners? With professional careers, working full time and keeping your flock in check. How do you do it all? What are your goals? What challenges have you had with your flocks? What are some of the joys they bring? I’m an...

    Chicken chores in the dark!

BRRRR too cold right now to sit in a chair when the sun goes down.....was 16 degrees when I left for work this morning I spend more time on the weekends before dark. I only have one coop this year.....setting up another this spring. I always look around in the coop for critters too....there...

    Chicken chores in the dark!

That is my routine too! Can't get home fast enough.....and if there's traffic, no way to beat the dark. Mine free range but come out of the coop when they hear the car....they know I'm coming......

    Flock Management Question

You might get both kinds of layers Some of mine started off laying in the yard....but now they lay in the nests. I left them in the coop for a longer period of time in the mornings so they got the idea. Now they are let out to free range in the morning and go back to the coop to lay. I have...

Whose hens lay 1 egg per day and what kind are they?

I would say it depends on the age more than the breed......If those are white leghorn pullets I would agree And what time period, can't be for the life of the hen! I've gotten 1 egg a day from mine...for a week at a time

    Flock Management Question

I don't think odd numbers matter....mine don't buddy up by twos. I see them hanging out but not always in even numbers.
