    Wording for Variance

I am doing the exact same thing. I, too, thought I was in the gray area and it turns out I'm not. My variance paperwork is due the 29th and my meeting before the zoning board is 3/20. The code enforcer warned me that others in my town have applied for and not received their variances so I...

    rubber type egg shell

We have 6 hens and every once in a while we get a rubbery shell, or a bumpy shell, or a thin shell that breaks easily. Like your chickens, they get oyster shell along with their chicken feed. I always think it's kind of cool (albeit disappointing) when I find one that like, which isn't that often.

    Nasty hen

Thanks! How long do you think I should keep nasty separated? Just a few days? Longer?

    Nasty hen

About 10 days ago we had to bring a severely injured chicken in the house for medical attention and time to heal(her injury was not from another chicken).Tried to re-integrate her this afternoon while the hens were free ranging (we have 6 hens, no Roos) and one of the other hens immediately...

My Family And I Want To Start A Flock!!!

We're in Buffalo, NY and have young children as well (two boys, ages 3 and 4). We have 6 white plymouth rocks and they are FANTASTIC! They are friendly, gently, social and great layers! Our girls follow us around the yard, jump up and visit us when we're sitting outside, and like to be held -...

Hi from a newbie in PA

Wow! Good for you! And how fortunate to have a contractor husband who can build a nice, big coop. I almost killed my husband with my coop request :-)

How to keep chickens cool in the heat. Tips wanted!

I've been going out every hour or so to throw ice cubed into their water, give them some cold fruit from the fridge. I also set up a nice dry dirt area for them to dust bathe in. It's in the low-mid 90s here with the heat index pushing it up to close to 100, and my white rocks are doing well.

Possibly getting ready to lay an egg?

Quote: When some of our girls are going to lay an egg they start clucking loudly and cooing. If I peek in the coop while they're in the nesting box, I get "yelled" at. Whenever I hear the loud clucking, I'm sure to find an egg. Sure sounds like your hen is getting ready to find a place to...

    "Strange" Chicken behavior

Two of my girls have been doing a very similar thing today, and it's a very hot day. They're happy, affectionate, eating, and drinking so I'm confidant they're just out there cooling off. :-)

    Open mouth breathin?

Mine are open mouth breathing, but it is really quite hot here today - over 90. I'm not concerned, I keep throwing ice cubes into their water periodically to keep their water cold, and gave them some dirt to roll around in.

    Karen in Buffalo, NY

Quote: I know those brown eggs were a mystery to me. I created a member page with pictures of our girls, if anyone has any ideas on breeds other than leghorn I'd love to hear them! I'm thinking maybe White Rocks? As far as the vegetables, we get our seeds from Baker Creek. It's great fun...

    White leghorns... argh...

We have 6 leghorns (also TSC chicks) and I have to say I love them to pieces! I wasn't too thrilled at first, when I discovered they were white leghorns because I'd heard about the flightiness...but most of mine are real sweet. I hold them and hand feed them all the time. And, oddly enough...
