Adorable broody hen. Also help please (^_^)

I have a broody bantam. She's my first to go broody. I've been dunking her in water for the last few days but she just goes straight back to the nest. If I lock her out of the nest boxes she nests round the back of the coop. Yesterday I went out and she was sat at the back of the coop. When...

Bald-bummed leghorn. Am quite confused :/

Hi I bought a big black leghorn hen about a month and a half ago. She had been kept in a small pen with a roo and so had a completely bald bum except for a few very long tail feathers. I was just wondering how long it takes for them to grow back. The rest of the girls are moulting so I'm not...

    Drip

pus coming out of her bum (vent) is bad. even if it is a broken egg that's still really bad as she could get an infection (you really don't want the broken egg going off inside her). Have a look round for a good method of getting a broken egg out of a chook. If you're unsure go to a vet.

    Please help! Urgent! Bullying Advice

Honestly I would give up the silkie (and have done, I had a silkie that was bullied and I felt too bad for her to keep her). It sound like she's just ended up as the bottom of the pecking order which is perfectly normal. No matter how big or small your flock is you'll end up with a chicken at...

Any remedys to stop egg eating?????

chilli won't work on birds the reason chillies developed their characteristic heat was to stop animals other than birds eating them. We can taste the extreme heat (as can other mammals, marsupials etc.) but birds can't taste it at all This is because it is much better for the chili to be...

Funny stories of new girls :)

I got 4 new girls in the last few days. I started off with 4 ISA Browns and a Black silkie cross either ancona or Australorp. Then I got a silkie and a brahma who both turned out to be sick so we returned them and exchanged for a HUGE black leghorn and a white leghorn. Then two of the ISA...

Do roosters ever mount other roosters?

Hi I bought a black leghorn hen today (assumed she was a hen as she had feathers pulled out from a roo mounting her) but she looks very big and has a huge comb for a hen :S her wattle doesn't hang down as low as in pictures I've seen of roosters but I'm still not sure. She has very long yellow...

at wits end with my @#$@% chickens!!!

if you can get enough chicken wire cheaply the easiest thing to do would be to simply lay it out flat along the top of the wall with as big an overhang on the outside as you gan manage without it drooping, just put rocks or bricks on it to stop it from falling off and bend it up and over so that...

Curious About Chickens In The House

I decided to have two little ones, a Silkie and a Brahma in the house. I've had them inside for 2 weeks now and I really wouldn't recommend it. It is possible but it's not best for either you, your house or your birds I tried diapers on them but even with well fitted diapers (I made...

Sneezing/Coughing Bantam WHAT DO I DO? (Video included)

Please help. My chicken keeps sneezing or coughing. It sounds really weird or like she has something stuck in her throat :S I'm afraid that she does and I don't know what to do about it. She's been living inside for about a week, could this be a problem? Here's a video of what she's doing...

2 roo's 2 pullets is this managable? help please...

If you only have enough room for 4 then definitely rehome the boys. 2 or 3 hens to a roo is just not enough. They can actually end up killing your hens from stress and over mating. Remember that the roos won't be happy either, they'll feel very frustrated all the time and once they get old...

Hi I was looking around for recipes to use up the 30 or so eggs we get a week and I came across an absolutely awesome website [link below]. It has tonnes of recipes. I've tried a few and they were great. Here's one of my favourites: Apricot Mousse: I found that this was a very nice dessert...

Pullet bantam silkie acting sleep, doesn't move around much.

Good news for the silkie She seems much more lively today. I kept her and the white one inside last night and they both seem to have perked up a bit. They were both eating loads today and drinking. I trimmed the feathers around the silkies eyes and she's started moving round lots more since...

Pullet bantam silkie acting sleep, doesn't move around much.

Hi. I only got her today. She is separated from the others but they can see her. I will move her inside straight away. I think I will take her back tomorrow, if she is very vulnerable to head injuries then I wouldn't want her around my big girls. The other bantam (a brahma pullet) seems to...

Pullet bantam silkie acting sleep, doesn't move around much.

Hi I got a new Silkie today along with one other bantam. They seemed ok with the other girls despite the others being bigger than them. There was barely any bullying and they seem to have settled down and are sticking to separate areas of the (very large) coop. I am concerned however because...
