My eggs are cracked in the same spot every day

I use hay, cause it's free in my case. I also use fallen leaves. Anything soft keeps the eggs clean and not cracked!

The biggest downside of living out in the boonies...

We are using "Wild Blue" satellite internet. It has come a long way and actually works quite well most of the time. It was dial-up before that, and we are too far out in the sticks for DSL.

    BYC KNITTING CLUB

I have several knitting projects in mind... A shrug for me, a new scarf, and a couple of other things. But, I'm about 3/4 through crocheting a new pullover for this winter, so I'd better finish that first.

are y'all better off than you were 4 years ago ?

x2. If it was easy, everyone would do it! We CHOOSE how we react to what life throws our way. You either choose to live abundantly or not. The people is the big houses don't have the abundance we have when they CHOOSE to react negatively.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Not my girls.... three BR lay in one corner, the other two layers have squared off in opposite corners of the coop. So.... when you go in the coop looking for eggs, look all around. When the nest boxes were all next to each other, they were just laying on the floor!

What do you wear on your feet in your coop area?

I leave the rainboots on the porch. Slip them on on the way down to the coop and then slip them off before I go back into the house

why did you start keeping chickens

My DH finally retired, and we bought a place in the country with this dilapidated old coop. Wanting to save money and be self-sufficient to a certain degree we raised a large garden this summer. Anyway, there was this coop just begging to be filled with chickens... So, TSC had their chicks at...

My coop has a sandy dirt floor too. I have never had to clean it out. All I do is all some more litter occasionally (every week or ten days), as the litter decomposes and disappears into the dirt. the sand is great, as it absorbs any moisture, and I never have to worry about it being wet...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have 8 ft of (main) roost and 11 chickens. Last night it was cool, and there were 7 huddled up in about 3 feet, and the other 4 down on the lower roost. Some days, they just line up like little soldiers though!

Once my RSL's started (on Sept 4), I've had eggs from each of them EVERY day except one. They are marvelous producers!

    What's in your nesting box?

Great idea about the welcome mat. My girls are the same... One wants all the nesting materials, and the other kicks it all out.
