    Bloody hen fight!

Well, my skinny girl was being pecked to death. She wasn't being allowed to eat or drink so I had to set up a separate coop/yard for her so she could heal. Now she's healed it's time to go back into the main coop. I knew they would just start pecking her again so Pinless Peepers it is! My...

    Bloody hen fight!

Wow! I've seen them get nasty towards each other, but this is the first time blood was drawn.

    Bloody hen fight!

There is one long roost inside my coop but only one in the run so far. My chubby leghorn has claimed it as her own and God bless any other hen that tries to get on it. Yesterday morning I took a pic of her enjoying it as she looked so happy there. We left for a few hours and when I came back...

WEIRD or ODD Eggs pics!!!! :)

What do you suppose this is all about? That's the membrane extended out. From Lucy ... my golden comet. Her eggs are usually a nice speckled brown but the last couple of days they've been very a pale tan color. This is just weird.

6 chickens, 3 days, No eggs.

Quote: They're about a year old now. Got them from Tractor supply store. It's ridiculous cold here (Syracuse area). When they stopped laying we had crazy cold, followed by springtime warm, followed immediately by crazy cold again (below zero temps). Maybe just stress from the rapid weather...

6 chickens, 3 days, No eggs.

Well, color me confused....... I woke up to 3 frozen white eggs this morning. So .. the leghorns might be over whatever was going on out there. Still nothing from my comets but I'll keep watch today and see if anything happens.

6 chickens, 3 days, No eggs.

Well, my reds won't let me touch them which is weird cause they usually come running to me when I open the door. But the leghorns are definitely starting to moult. The others look fine and smooth but I'll try to look again today. No sign of lice or mites on the leghorns and I imagine if...

6 chickens, 3 days, No eggs.

Thank you. I'll have to look up signs of moult. I thought it would be more obvious but I'll look it up and check again. How likely is it that all 6 of them would be moulting at the same time?

6 chickens, 3 days, No eggs.

Nope, I've had these girls since last spring. 3 Red Sex Links and 3 white leghorns. Very reliable layers. There are no stressors that I can see except the ridiculous change in weather. Went from freezing winter, nice spring 60's and back to freezing winter in a matter of days. We got a new...

6 chickens, 3 days, No eggs.

Zero eggs out of all six of them. They went from 6 eggs a day most days to none. Can't figure it out. Today was the third day. I haven't changed their food. Their light is on 14 hours a day and has been since the days started shortening on their own. Water available to them all day. Just...

    Dust bathing picture thread!!!

Mine like the sand/sweet PDZ mix. They roll around in it like a dog scratching it's back, flap around, etc. They all seem to use the section underneath the poop board. They've also dug out a section under the coop to bathe in which is mostly sand with some PDZ in it. I have no pictures...

    Freezing in Pennsylvania

Temps are supposed to plummet to well below zero tonight from today's fifties. I'm going to break down and put a brooder lamp in there for the night. I don't use straw but sand/pdz so I'm not too worried about a fire. Unfortunately, I don't have a garage with enough space for 6 full grown...

    Our new Great Dane puppy!

She's beautiful! We lost one of our danes this summer. Otis was beyond special. We still have Dino who is actually older (8). Once you have had danes its hard not to have them anymore. We keep saying no more after Dino goes, but I know I will. Good luck with the housetraining. What fun!

    Minus 4 this morning.

With a 20 below wind chill. I'm glad I'm home all day to keep an eye on my girls. It's generally pretty cold here, but this morning is a doozy. It's only supposed to hit 4 degrees today. I took a big bowl of warm oatmeal out to them first thing this morning and I'll keep changing out their...

Poll: Statistics on the fate of "spent" layers

My girls aren't even a year old so I haven't had to make any decisions yet. I did find a lady who "rescues" old chickens. I will have to decide when the time comes. From what I understand they wouldn't be especially tasty anyway.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

5/6 The days are shorter so I expected a drop. It's been 5 eggs for the past 4 days. If it drops below that I might consider lights to give them a couple more hours of daylight.

    How do your chickens sleep?

Mine all gather up on the left side of the roost. It's a good 5' long, but they all (six of them) scrunch together for the night. I wonder if it's because the left side is furthest from the pop door (which is closed for the night).
