    incubator

I haven't hatched for a couple years, and am heating up my incubator to try hatching a dozen Silkie eggs. I remember the temp, but can't remember what humidity is suggested as best, and have apparently lost my book on the bator. Can anyone bring me up to speed on humidity? Thanks. (Used...

What kind of nests for Seramas??

I have 4 little Serama hens, and tho I have tried a couple kinds of small, simple nests, they insist on laying randomly around the floor in the shavings, or occasionally outside in their pen on the grass. What do you use, or does anyone have any success with nests for them?

    Eggs in incubator ruined??

Wonder if any of you have had experience with something like this? I had my bator heated up and adjusted. Put eggs in Thurs. afternoon about 3p.m. Fri. morning we had tornadoes in the area, high wind, and the electricity went off about 9 a.m. (meaning eggs had been in the bator about 18...

    Help. Gasping chick

I have 3 Serama chicks about 3 weeks old. Someone gave me (stupid me!) 4 Japanese bantams about the same age. I put them in a seperate brooder, but fairly near my Seramas. 2 of the Japs started stretching their necks up a bit and seemed to be gasping for breath, opening their beaks with...

    My first Serama egg

I have hatched 6 Seramas, the day after Christmas. 2 little roos and 4 little pullets. Yesterday, I got the first egg!! They lack 8 days being 4 months old!! I had no idea they started laying so young. The little roos have had red comb and wattles for a month, and THEY were quite...

My new Serama coop & pen

I wanted a very safe place for my little Seramas. DH & I put together this pen, covered sides and top with vinyl covered chicken wire. Bottom 2 ft of pen is 1/2 x 1/2 wire. The pen is 6 ft by 12 ft, and at the back of the pen is the 6 ft by 3 ft coop, up on legs so that the grass under it is...

Hatch eggs in an egg carton??????

I just contacted a nice member here who said they put their eggs into an egg carton (just the bottom, I assume) for the last 3 days, and let them hatch there. I never heard of this. Now I see a few posts on here that say the same. It is rather upsetting to see the early hatched chicks run...

Incubating Seramas with other small breeds???

I will be getting some Serama eggs in the mail in a few days. I have a Little Giant 9200 Still Air incubator with no turner. I understand that the Serama eggs like more humidity, and a little higher temperature, right? And I am definately wanting to hatch for the best results I can get for...

    PICS--My Seramas are 6 1/2 weeks old

Well, my babies are coming right along. They are so tousled looking as their feathers are coming in. If anyone ever got around them but me, I would think they were being wooled around something terrible, but apparently it is just the baby feathers. They spend a lot of time preening...

    Homemade winter waterer????????

I know I have seen on here a dozen times how to build a heater with a light bulb and a cement block, to set your metal waterer on. For some reason, I now can't locate any of these posts. I remember most of the basics, but on thinking about doing it, how do you keep the bulb from setting the...

    Rooster any good?

I have about 38 standard size hens--RIR, EE, Barred Rock, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Silver Laced Wyandotte, couple Light Bramans, couple Red Sex links, Black Austrulorp, couple Cinnamon Queens, etc. All layers. With these 38, I have ONE RIR rooster. I doubt if he can make all the eggs...

    Oh, Lordy! Ice storm coming!

We are predicted to have another ice storm starting tomorrow and getting worse Tuesday. They are afraid the electricity will go off, if enough ice forms on the lines so that they come down. We have filled 5 gal. buckets so I will have water for my chickens, and to flush the toilet. Our...

    PIC HEAVY--My 6 Serama chicks---size comparison

My 6 Serama babies that hatched the day after Christmas are now 26 days old. There is becoming quite a difference in size. I expected them all to be size C's, but looks like there will be some size differences. I think I can already see that I have 2 roos and 4 pullets, going by the little...

    Feeding baby Serama's???

I have been told that even if feeding crumbles chick feed, it needs to be ground, or crumbled finer, so the tiny Seramas can eat it. I have been placing small batches between wax paper and rolling it with a rolling pin, which crumbles it finer. They are now 3 weeks old--how long before you...

PICS--My Serama babies are 3 wks. old

I am trying again to take some pics of my Serama chicks. They look so perky till I catch them and set them where I can take a pic, at which time they pretty well wilt. Here are my 2 smallest ones, which in regular chickens or other animals would be my sorry little runts, but I guess since...

    ducks NEED water??

Seems like I have read that you have to have enough water out for ducks that they can completely submerge their heads, for health reasons, and they they don't do well, or die?, if they can't do this? I am sure a pool so they can swim is very wanted, but is it true they have to at least...

PICS--My Serama babies are 2 weeks old

Well, my babies are 2 weeks old, and so cute. They just strut around the brooder, growing feathers like crazy. However, when you get them out to take a picture, they crouch down and look petrified, as tho they are confident this is their last moments on this earth. Finally got a few halfway...

10 day old Serama baby sneezing. Help?

I have 6 Serama chicks I hatched the dayafter Christmas. All are feisty, eating and drinking good, and growing wing feathers like crazy. They are in a brooder in our large garage, which is heated by the wood furnace that pipes into the house. They have a light bulb over one end of the large...

PICS of my week old Serama chicks

I have managed to hatch 6 of the cutest little chicks I ever saw. Here are pics of 3 of them. The other 3 not pictured all look like the one with the longest wing feathersm except not quite as long. They hatched over 2 days, and the 2 smaller ones are a day younger. Hope you enjoy the...
