The Poop Coop Chicken Farm
Our Story:
This summer is our first time with raising chickens. I have to say that I have never been fond of chickens and have had drilled into my head since I was young that chickens are dirty creatures that are just to be eaten, and only occasionally. Well...
It has been really cold and not much day light any more. I went from 9-10 eggs a day to 3 yesterday. I read that putting a light in will help. PLease offer any advice you might have. The temps are in the 40's during the day and teens at night.
I have 10 seven week old chicks in my coop. I have the light on 24/7 and it is getting in to the 70's during the day and 50's-60's at night. It is safe to discontinue the light at this point?
It was a very exciting Memorial Day. The girls went outside in the run for the first time. They were very nervous to hit the outside air. The air was very chilly (56*) so they did not stay in the run very long. They quickly went inside and went for the light. They are 3.5 weeks old.
My "girls" are 3 weeks old and are in their coop with a light. It is in the 60's during the day and 40's at night. Is it safe to remove the light during the day? I have not seen them under the light in a week. Each time I check they are on the roost far from the light.
I currently have 10 chicks (2.5 weeks old) They were assorted pullets from TSC. People have identified them here as Golden Comets. I also have 6 RIR on order due to arrive on the 8th of June, and 6 Cornish Cross...will place another larger order of cornish in mid-july.
I want to place an order of cornish cross. It is cheaper to go straight run. Will the roosters be old enough at 8-10 weeks to crow? I live in close quarters and cannot have a rooster.
My chicks were stinking to high heaven and putting dust everywhere. I made a make-shift area in my coop by dividing the 4x8 section in half. I put them in it for the night. THey have alight and under the light it is about 82*F. The ourside air tonight will be about 40*F. Are they going to...
My power is out and my chicks are int he brooder, but inside the house. THey are 15 days old. When do I need to worry? I have a generator, but am not home to start it...will be atleast 4 hours before I can get home.
A friend told me that I could put a bowl of play sand in the brooder for the chicks to use as grit and then put s piece of sod on there for them to enjoy. Help, not sure if I should. THey are 14 days today.
