Silkie's feet are swollen, toenails are disappearing

I have two three year old silkies. One of them has rapidly developed an ugly foot issue, her toes have swollen up and effectively dropped off. She has lost most of her claws. In every other way she is in good health. Still hobbles around, great appetite, laying occasionally, goes broody, just...

A bird question...just not about chickens...

I found a huge messy nest today in some fairly low bushes, similar to a pigeon's nest but with more depth. It had one greenish/blue speckled egg in it, a little smaller than a silkie's. Any idea what type of bird would have laid this? In Connecticut.

What are the symptoms of poisoning in a chicken/rooster?

We came home from work today to find our rooster dead. We have a neighbor who HATES him with a passion, we suspect she may have poisoned him as he has no visible injuries. He was a big healthy nine month old boy in his prime. We found him on his back with his neck twisted almost in an S bend...

Normal weight for a New Hampshire Red rooster?

I have a gorgeous New Hampshire Red rooster that I rescued from a live poultry market (he should have been someone's lunch). I weighed him today and he is fifteen pounds. Is this exceptionally large?

Chickens have messy butts....is this a sign of worms?

Several but not all of my hens have messy butts, they have dry poop encrusted beneath their vents. Is this a sign of worms? They are eating normally, not losing weight and not lethargic.

Please tell me what breed he is..

I rescued this handsome boy from a vivero or live poultry market, he was destined to be slaughtered. Live poultry market cater to mostly immigrants who prefer their meat very fresh, older hens who are considered past prime laying age end up here as 'soup' chickens. I got one young rooster, and...

Looking to buy fertile eggs, chicks or hens in CT..

I'm in Stratford CT, Fairfield county, and I'm having a hard time finding somewhere to buy fertile eggs, or chicks anywhere besides Benedicts. I'd like to find a young Orpington pullet or chicks or even fertile eggs I can hatch myself, if possible. If you can recommend somewhere within an hour...

Chicken left her egg for whole morning, found it cold, still viable?

I found a fertile egg that my silkie has been sitting on for over two weeks, cold and alone on the coop floor. She had not been sitting on it for about four hours max. Will it still hatch? I put it back under her and she has been on it since. I candled it and saw no movement whatsoever, i have...

Hen has deep gashes, gangrene from over enthusiastic rooster

My favorite hen is unfortunately also my young rooster's favorite. She has been hanging around in the coop for two days, I thought it was because she was avoiding him jumping her five times a day. I picked her this evening and realised she has two deep gashes on her back, one stinks with...

Check out my rescued hen (PICTURE)

I got her and the big girl behind her from a live poultry market in Bridgeport. Most people go there to buy a freshly slaughtered chicken (popular with Hispanic people in particular it seems from my visits there). The pre-plucked girl is a former 'battery' hen, an egg producer, who is now only...

Anyone else in Fairfield county CT?

I'm in Stratford and have seen quite a few other undercover chicken owners, just wondering if there is anyone else posting on here from this area. We're not really supposed to keep chickens here, but so far so good, no complaints (no roosters!). I have six girls...NJ Giant, 2 araucanas, 2...

Had to call in a cruelty case I came across today

I have a little backyard flock, and had my broody silkies hatch two eggs this summer, we ended up with a rooster. I live in the burbs in CT and can't keep him, so went to a local farm to ask if they could take him. I had often seen roosters and hens wandering around free range among the horses...

Horrible scene, just need to vent

My eight year old daughter just came running into the house screaming that our ten week old puppy had hurt one of the chickens (they free range in my suburban yard, someone let the dog out and forgot to keep an eye on him). I came outside to find my oldest chicken completely skinned from the...

At what age can I separate a chick from it's mother?

I have a six week old chick that is still very attached to it's mother, and a loner chick I incubated. I'd like to put them together so the loner realizes it is actually a chicken and not a person that sleeps in the bathroom every night, lol. At what age can I separate the other chick from it's...

How do I introduce a chick to the flock that I hand raised alone?

I have a six week old chick who I had to hand raise alone due to her silkie mommies abandoning her egg in favor of a chick that hatched two days before her. She has slept in my bathroom at night, and goes out in a cage in the garden during the day, and is allowed to roam with supervision. She...
