My favorite Hen has been broody for 7 weeks, I got her some fertile eggs 4 weeks ago that are just hatching now, but she has hardly been eating/drinking in all this time.
She has terrible diarrhea just like water and this morning I noticed blood in it. She doesn't seem lethargic, but this is...
I have a new broody and was wondering if anyone could help me with these questions?
*Does the broody hen with eggs need her own pen? Will she need to be by herself with the chicks after they hatch? (I only have 2 hens who are sisters and best friends, If I had to separate the broody it would...
Well the title says it! My Silkie has gone Broody for the first time (or I think that's what's up)!
I bought some fertile hatching eggs since there's no cockerel in with her and put them in her coop, but she didn't sit on them, I have tried picking her up and putting her on them and pushing...
Suddenly one of my Silkies, who is 10 weeks old can't walk/stand. One leg is slipping one way and the other the other way? At first it was just on my kitchen floor and I thought he just had a weak leg, but yesterday I found him flat out. I've taken a photo to show you what I mean.
I do remember...
I'm new at chicken keeping so if this is a normal trait of a chick/chicken I apologise in advance for my stupidity!
I have 4 2 week old miniature Silkies. Twohave vaultedskulls, two normal. Oe of the vaulted skulls Silkies has been doing a weird thing. I hear really loud peeping (the sort of...
They were lost in a postal strike for 4 days as eggs.. but all hatched!
2/4 have lumps on their head. Can anyone tell me what these are? The eggs were from a show silkie.
Thanks.

This will be my 5th or 6th batch of eggs. Out of those I only got 1 chick!! They all developed fine right until the last minute then died in shell before pipping
With each hatch I have collaberated thermometer and hygrometer, replaced both, tried higher/ lower humidity, turned more or less...
I have some expensive show breed eggs on the way, and have only hatched 1 chick out of the last 3 batches.
The first was low humidity and none of the eggs hatched.. one that I opened had a deformed foot.
Second I had temp spike
Third hatch temp was stable at 99.5, humidity, 50 last 4/5 days...
I hatched 1 black silkie.. it's mates from a different hatch were due 3-4 days later (from the same incubator) They didn't make it, I think the high humidity caused them to drown (It was at 70 at the highest point? but they had a 4 day lockdown due to the black hatching earlier) Yolk was...
Peep peep peep peep PEEP PEEEEEEP peep peep peep bloody peeeeeeeeep!!
And breathe!
Firstly, hello to everyone. I have been praying to officially join this part of the forum for months, but have been unsucsessful in trying to hatch my miniature Silkies, until now!! I have one lone 'black'...
I'm soo egg-cited. I have tried hatching these miniature Silkie eggs 3 times now, this is third time lucky. I poked a metal stick through the air vent and taped the egg which is on day 20 as I read the mama chicken does that and 10 minutes later.. I have a pip!!
I have 4 whites, due on Tuesday...
Is there a particular breed that does this the most? Is it possible that eggs do not rock at all or peep but still hatch?
There's nothing at all from mine?
Is there such a thing?
I'm on my third go (lucky!) of trying to hatch miniature Silkies which I understand are a rare breed here and un heard of it U.S?
I think if a rarer breed of chickens eggs are harder to hatch I may try something else next time...
Or maybe the size has something to do...
..Or that i'm confessing to it!
I was in a rush to go out this morning, checked on bator found humidity was at 58, so quickly opened the lid for a couple of mins to bring it down....
and forgot to place lid back on!
I was gone for 2.5 hours and it took a further 30 minutes to bring temp back...
Can anyone tell me the effects of high humidity (60) in the first week. If the humidity is kept at a normal stable for the rest of the hatch will hatch rate be effected.. and how?
Thanks.
I had 6 eggs in bator, but only one was fertile.. Luckily I had more on order. But now one of the eggs is 4 days ahead.. I dont really want to get another incubator for one egg.
I'm thinking about lockdown. Would the oner egg still hatch if I opened the incubator and turned the others, or could...
I have an incubator that holds 7-8 small eggs.
Someone has taken pity on my recent hatching mess up and given me 6 black mini Silkie eggs, she says she is not sure if they are fertile as the last batch sent out was 100% infertile, but rather than eat she would send to me.. for free They were...
Me again
I was right and my whole hatch of 4 miniature Silkies had died.. except for one. Day 22 and no pipping, chirping etc. So I candled them all and saw tiny movement in one.
I opened with tweezers from the fat end and found my first dead chick.. then the second and third. Each was curled...
