    Can't get it right!

My first 2 hatches (one in March, one in April) I struggled with low humidity in lockdown and had shrink wrapped chicks that died before or after pipping. This hatch (today is day 23) my babies drowned. I had 5 out of 17 chicks hatch, the rest didn't even pip. I cracked them open and all were...

    Getting Nervous!

I've had a couple that looked similar to this and they did just fine. I'd leave it alone, let it rest. That is the umbilical area, will shrink in a bit. It may take a good day to dry off and get going, but rest assured as that yolk (the bulge you see in the belly, which has been absorbed and...

    HELP.. HUmidity for lockdown???

How many eggs do you have in that Brinsea? I had 11 eggs make it to lockdown in mine, struggled to get humidity to stay over 60% and had many get stuck and dried out despite being devoted to not opening the incubator. 8 made it, half of those were stuck for over 24 hours pipped and/or partially...

Setting Eggs 4/17! Who's With Me?

I'm day 20 with a batch of Exchequer Leghorns, Mottled Houdans and some local barnyard eggs (very productive mixed flock) to fill the incubator. I woke up to 1 cutie freshly hatched, one of the local eggs, of course, not the expensive shipped eggs! Went out for a feed store and breakfast taco...

Need advice....Should I throw Away Eggs?

Leave them alone until day 25, unless you smell something nasty/rotten. My last hatch went on until day 25. Don't open the incubator, keep humidity super, super high, like 80%+. Helped me a lot.

Pipped but not Zipped 48hrs Later..Miracle Update Post #1

Having lost 8 chicks due to shrink wrapping on my first hatch, then 14 on my second, all due to shrink wrapping, I'd definitely help. I know nothing about bob whites, but for my chicks, helping the pipped and/or zipped chicks that had not made progress after 24+ hrs saved 8 lives. Those babies...

Tell me some of your Lock down stories!

I had a neurotic second hatching last month with lockdown humidities difficult to keep up, requiring the adding of more and more water, then many stuck chicks that had to be helped out after many hours struggling to zip. Very frustrating. I felt hatching in the cartons was detrimental as my...

    APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in

I'm so glad I logged in today. I've been staring at my last few Brahma eggs and wondering when, when, when? \\ and reading these posts gives me the courage to wait for them. After a long and arduous experience with my Dorkings, having to help out 4 that had shrink wrapped despite my obsessive...

Shrinky dinks: not good for chicks

Well, that last chick was dead in the shell, never pipped, obviously shrinkwrapped. I am so disappointed. I ended up with 8 out of the 10 that made it to lockdown surviving, 4 obviously dried in the shell needing rescue but now doing great. I have another incubator that has been at 70%...

    APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in

Quote: Congrats! Hoping that you will awake from your needed nap to all the rest hatched. Yep, it must be the drama of not knowing that we all must enjoy, every hatch feels like that! What are Aussies? I'm so looking forward to seeing Dorking chick pics & the others. Aussies, just a...

Shrinky dinks: not good for chicks

Well, after nearly 48 hrs of eggs pipped or zipped with little to no progress, and only 4 of my 10 Dorkings hatching successfully though arduously over many hours, I helped out 5 of the remaining 6 and here's what I found: SHRINKY DINKS!!!!! I dry incubated these rascals following the...

    Dorkings, Dorkings, Dorkings!!!

4 Dorks out, the rest are taking FOREVER!!!!! that first baby is so loud and obnoxious, I broke the golden rule and snatched her out, plus Mr. Number 2, and put them in the LG still air as a brooder for now. They were so thirsty!!! Number one had been out for about 36 hrs. These kids are...

    APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in

Wow are those chicks in the LG still air "brooder" LOUD!!!! The domino effect is happening in the Hova Bator. More Aussies are out, and several Brahmas are trying very hard to join them Humidity dropped again (to 66%) in the Brinsea so I tossed in a sponge soaked in warm water. Now it's...

Help Me Decide on a Great Dual Purpose Homesteading Breed!

Hey, I'm right there with you and here's what I've chosen to hatch to add to my Dorkings, Australorps, Brahmas and Wyandottes: Delawares, Houdans (I was told they can be nicely broody), Buckeyes, Speckled Sussex and Exchequer Leghorns. I like big dual purpose birds with 5 toes (also have some...

    APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in

Wow am I tired. Kids came running in this morning to tell me there were 2 Dorkings in the Brinsea and 2 yellow chicks in with the black one (australorp). Yes, 2 of the Light or Buff Brahmas hatched out of eggs that had just pipped at 2 a.m. the 2 that have been zipping forever are still not...

    APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in

Silly me indeed! Number 2, who I call Cesar, has come blasting out! Yes, Dorking number 2 is here!

    APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in

Still only one Dorking, one Australorp. The Dorkings have 2 that are almost, almost out. They've been unzipped for hours, but the actual shedding off of the egg and emergence has been eternal, simply eternal. One finally has a wing and bill out. It seems determined! I upped humidity (no...

Help how long can the chicks sit in the incubator and other concerns?

Ya know, I've been watching my eggs all day, literally about 13 hrs, and the ones that were zipping at 10 a.m. are still working to get out. They are fully zipped and wiggling and rolling like crazy, seem to be doing a marathon with continued energy steadily working on that egg, but not...

    which is bigger?

My poor long lost Brahmas were HUGE! I loved them. Esp the rooster, so gentle the kids would haul him around. For weight and width, probably Brahma is king! Otherwise, I agree with the Orp being the heavy one, the Cochin the "wider" one!
